Lehigh falls to Patriot League foe Colgate

4/17/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

– Lehigh dropped a 14-8 decision to Patriot League leader Colgate on Saturday afternoon.  The game was knotted at five heading into halftime, but from there Colgate was simply too much for Lehigh, outscoring the Mountain Hawks 9-5 in the second half.  Meredith Carso and Ella Studdiford both registered hat tricks on the afternoon.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 5-8 on the season, 1-4 in Patriot League action, while the Raiders improve to 10-4 overall and remain perfect in league action at 5-0.

Colgate jumped all over the Mountain Hawks in the opening 15 minutes, scoring three goals, to take a 3-0 lead at the 16:56 mark.  However, Lehigh fought back, scoring four of the next five goals to even the score at four.  Carso netted her first score of the game at the 15:42 mark and Studdiford followed with her first goal at the 8:05 mark.  After Becky Ortolano found the back of the net for Colgate with 7:40 remaining in the half, Carso and Studdiford answered once again, in a span of 1:13.

The two teams then exchanged goals with Katie McVeigh netting goal number 34 on the season at the 4:34 mark to put the Raiders back in front 5-4.  Barrie Cominsky then tied the game for Lehigh with just one minute left in the stanza and the score was locked at five heading into halftime.

The second half started well for Lehigh, as Amy Chamberlain scored off of a free position shot at the 25:59 mark and Carso followed that up with her third score of the game at the 24:41 clip, and the Mountain Hawks were in front by a count of 7-5.  From there however, it was a different story as Colgate showed why it sits atop the Patriot League standings.

The Raiders reeled off nine consecutive goals, led by Kelly Winning’s three scores and with just over two minutes to go in the contest, Colgate was in front 14-7.  Studdiford found the back of the net with just 1:42 left to play to make the final score 14-8.

Chamberlain had one assist for Lehigh, while on the Colgate side, Winning netted four goals, while McVeigh and Ortolano both scored three times.  Lehigh outshot the Raiders by a 30-28 mark, but Colgate managed to scoop up 30 groundballs compared to Lehigh’s 26.  Cominsky and Sue Schoelle both recorded a team high four groundballs for the Mountain Hawks, while in goal, Kyle Begina stopped eight Raider shots in her 60 minutes of action.  Colgate’s goalie Sue Bielamowicz was extremely tough, as she sent back 17 Lehigh shots on the afternoon.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph’s in a game that was cancelled earlier in the season due to inclement weather.  The game on Tuesday is scheduled to get underway at 6:00.
