Lehigh blasts Lafayette for sixth straight win

4/1/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis

Bethlehem, PA – The Mountain Hawks are steamrolling their way towards a potential Patriot League title, and the latest victim is their archrivals the Lafayette Leopards.  Lehigh failed to drop a set in pummeling the Leopards 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Lewis Tennis Center. The victory was the sixth straight for the Mountain Hawks, as they improve to 12-2 on the year and 2-0 in Patriot League play.  Lafayette fell to 5-4, 0-2 with the loss.

Lehigh won on the afternoon despite only having the services of senior co-captain Rachel Samson for doubles.  Samson, who was ill, sat out the singles part of the match.  But it was no matter, as Lehigh won for the fourth straight year over their rivals from Easton.

In doubles, Kristen Nowicki and Samson defeated the top flight pair for Lafayette of Chez Saricas and Monika Serrano 8-3.  Gwen Dwyer and Starr Foster then teamed up in the second flight to win 8-5, while Maria Anorga and Lindsay Long took the third set 8-1 as the Mountain Hawks went up 1-0.

In singles, Lehigh continued to pour it on, losing a total of just eight games through the top three flights to clinch the victory.  Nowicki defeated Saricas 6-2, 6-1, Dwyer bested Serrano 6-2, 6-0, and Anorga won 6-1, 6-2 over Susan King.

The closest contest was in the fourth flight, as Lindsay Long was pushed to a tie-break in the first set before winning 7-6, 6-4 to make it 5-0.  In the last two flights, Starr Foster was victorious 6-3, 6-3, over Steph Rosman and Cessa Murasko-Blank defeated Meghan Fitzgerald 6-3, 6-1.

Head coach Dave Shook was very pleased with his team’s performance, especially considering he didn’t play Samson in singles. “It was tough to give her a rest,” said Shook. “But at the same time it’s a big confidence builder for our freshman to come in, their first match against Lafayette, and do so well.  We are really starting to build momentum for the rest of the season.  I think the cat is out of the bag now, other schools know we have a good team, so we have to just keep playing as well as we have been.”

After the victory, Lehigh improved to 11-8 against Lafayette in the yearly sports competition between the two schools.  The Mountain Hawks have won the overall series in each of the last two seasons.

Lehigh is now tied for first in the Patriot League with Army at 2-0.  The team returns to the court on April 7, when they travel to Bucknell for another Patriot League affair.  The match is set to get underway at 3:30.
