Bucknell match goes to final set, where Bison prevail

Lewisburg, PA – The Lehigh express hit a speed bump on Wednesday afternoon at Bucknell falling in a very close match 4-3 to the homestanding Bison. The Mountain Hawks had won six straight matches coming into the afternoon, but dropped two crucial singles matches in three sets to fall from the ranks of the unbeaten in Patriot League action.
Bucknell took the doubles point to start the match, as only Kristen Nowicki and Rachel Samson could win a set. Samson and Nowicki took the first set 8-4, but the Bison rallied to win the point taking the last two sets 8-6, 8-6.
Nowicki, fresh off being named Patriot League Player of the Month for March, showed why as she defeated Rheanna Gaskin 6-2, 6-0 in the top flight match. Samson followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ronnie Brown to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Bucknell bounced back from there, as they took the next two matches to make it 3-2 before the fifth flight match. Lindsay Long came through to tie it up again at 3-3, besting Sam Berthod 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. In the final match featuring Chelsea Mills and Starr Foster, Mills took the first set 6-3. Foster then toughed out the second set, winning 7-6 in the tiebreaker. But, Mills held fast for Bucknell, winning the third and deciding set 6-4 to give Bucknell the win.
With the loss, Lehigh falls to 12-3 (2-1 in the Patriot League), while Bucknell improves to 13-2 (2-2). The Mountain Hawks get back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Colgate for a
