Mountain Hawks fall to Harvard

3/31/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh came up on the short end of a 16-5 decision versus Harvard on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The Crimson scored five goals in the first 20 minutes and the Mountain Hawks were never able to recover.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 3-5 on the season, while the Crimson improves to 4-3.

Casey Owens scored the first of her five goals on the evening at the 25:40 mark of the first half and two minutes later Emma Millon found the back of the net to put Harvard up 2-0.  Owens then scored two more goals in the next 10 minutes and when Casey Orr snuck a ball past Lehigh goalie Kyle Begina at the 12:25 mark, the score stood at 5-0 in favor of Harvard.  Ella Studdiford and Amy Chamberlain then notched two quick scores for Lehigh in a matter of 30 seconds and it appeared as though Lehigh was going to mount a comeback.

But Harvard dashed those hopes immediately as the Crimson piled on five more goals in the final seven minutes of the half and the Mountain Hawk comeback was squashed.  In the second half, Barrie Cominsky, Emily Studiford and Sarah Starsoneck all connected on goals for Lehigh, including Starsoneck’s that came with just one second on the clock, which drew quite a roar out of the crowd.

Jen Fleming, Emily Studdiford and Kellan Van Hoesen each registered an assist for Lehigh on the evening.  In goal for the Mountain Hawks, Begina started the game and registered seven saves, while in the second half, Vanessa Abbot came in for relief and also recorded seven saves.  Emily Studdiford scooped up six groundballs on the evening, while Meredith Carso, Chamberlain and Cominsky scooped up three.

Harvard was led in goals by Owens and her five goals, while Catherine Sproul added four.  Caroline Hines recorded six assists, while Jen Brooks tallied three.  Harvard goalie Kathryn Tylander stopped four Lehigh shots on the night, and the Crimson as a team out shot Lehigh 42-13.

Head Coach Jim Shreve was disappointed after the game, but at the same time remained upbeat and ready for the next game.  “We got beat by a better team tonight.  They played well and we didn’t.  We really need to sharpen up our offense for the coming games.”  Shreve adds, “It was good that we fought back at the end and hustled and were able to score a few goals there at the end.  We’ll be ready for Holy Cross on Saturday, these girls will continue to work hard, they have a good attitude and I know they’ll come out and work hard these next few days in practice.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks welcome Patriot League foe Holy Cross to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 and will be broadcast live on Service Electric TV2 Sports with Micah B. Hart and Jeff Tourial beginning at 1:00.  The contest will also be streamed over the Internet on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
