Park sets record, earns medallist honors at GW Invite

Issue, MD – Lehigh sophomore Nam Park fired a six-under par 138 to win the two-day George Washington Invitational. Of the 125 individuals competing, Park was the only golfer finishing under par over the 36 holes, played at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club. The tournament win is the second this year for Park, as he also captured Lehigh’s Don Mershon Classic in the fall.
As a team, Lehigh shot a 616 to finish in a tie for eighth place at the 20-team event. Host George Washington took home top team honors by shooting a 596.
In Saturday’s opening round, Park shot a five-under par 67 to race out to an early advantage atop the leaderboard. His early round success not only gave him a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round of action, but it also set a single-round course scoring record in the process. Park followed his 67 on Saturday with a one-under 71 on Sunday to coast to the tournament victory. “This was the best individual effort I’ve seen in my 15 years [as head coach],” said Lehigh’s Kelly Gutshall following Park’s dominant play. “[His effort] overshadowed other recent success we’ve had in the past. He was just about perfect, except for two putts.” Other Lehigh finishers included freshman Alan Borowsky, who finished in an eleventh place tie with a five-over par 149. Senior John Jaravata shot a 164, and classmate Drew LaVine posted a 165. Lehigh returns to the links on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks take part in the two-day Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
