Lehigh uses team effort to defeat Sacred Heart

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh received contributions from everyone on its team on Sunday afternoon and the result was a 10-7 victory over a tough Sacred Heart team to end the Mountain Hawks two-game losing streak. Meredith Carso, Barrie Cominsky, Sarah Starsoneck and Kellan Van Hoesen all scored twice for Lehigh, who improves to 3-4 on the season, while the visiting Pioneers fall to 6-3.
Lehigh came out strong right from the start and jumped all over the Pioneers, as Cominsky scored an unassisted goal at the 23:30 mark of the opening half to put the Mountain Hawks in front 1-0. It was evident that Lehigh wanted this game, as the Brown and White continually beat the Pioneers to ground balls and held a decided edge in draw controls. Following a Sacred Heart score to tie the game, Lehigh netted two straight scores, one each from Emily Studdiford and Starsoneck, and the Mountain Hawks were in front 3-1.
Sacred Heart then pulled to within one goal at 3-2, when Emily Tully scored at the 16:36 mark of the half, but Lehigh roared right back, as Van Hoesen scored two goals in a matter of 50 seconds, and the Mountain Hawks were back in front by three at 5-2. The Pioneers kept it close with a goal of their own, but Ella Studdiford found the back of the net at the 7:27 clip and Carso scored her first goal of the game with 4:41 remaining in the half to put Lehigh ahead 7-3. JoAnn Montesarchio scored a late goal in the first half to make the score 7-4 in favor of Lehigh at halftime.
Jackie Reichert opened the second half with a goal to pull Sacred Heart to within 7-5, but as it did all day, Lehigh responded, as Starsoneck scored her second goal of the contest at the 25:25 mark of the second stanza to put Lehigh back in front by three. The Mountain Hawks would then equal their biggest lead of the day, this time as Carso found the back of the net for the second time off of a brilliant 360-degree spinning shot that found the back of the net at the 19:03 mark and Lehigh was in control at 9-5.
Cominsky scored her second goal of the game at the 13:02 mark and there was no doubt from that point on that Lehigh would have this game. Carso added two assists on the afternoon to go with her two goals, while Amy Chamberlain, Cominsky and Emily Studdiford all added assists for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh dominated the ground balls on the afternoon, scooping up 20 compared to Sacred Heart’s six, led by Carso and Ashley Manion’s four for the game. Kyle Begina was solid all afternoon in goal for Lehigh, as she sent back 11 shots, making timely save after save.
Head Coach Jim Shreve was proud of the team’s effort and of the way they controlled certain areas of the game. “We set out to control the groundballs and the draw controls. We were extremely focused on these two areas today. Once we were able to achieve that, it gave us more possessions and many opportunities to score, which we capitalized on.” Shreve adds, “Meredith Carso played a great game for us today, and all of the seniors really stepped up and took control. This is a good win for this team.”
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks welcome Ivy League member Harvard to the Ulrich Sports Complex. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
