Feature Story on Dunn: It's All About the Program
Billy Dunn enters his eighth season on the Lehigh men's basketball staff in 2024-25, serving as Student-Athlete Support and Enrichment Coordinator. Dunn has previously served as Director of Operations and Enrichment. Â
In his first season at Lehigh, Dunn served as a resource for the Mountain Hawks' players and coaches, speaking into concepts of character and leadership while running a pregame chapel for those interested. Lehigh posted an eight-game winning streak to end the regular season, tying for third place in the league standings and earning a home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals for the eighth time in the last nine years. Dunn received the team's Sixth Man of the Year Award at its annual end-of-year banquet.
Â
Dunn expanded his role in 2018-19, serving as Director of Operations and Enrichment. He continued to serve as a resource for the members of the program, running things such as a pregame chapel, while also coordinating the daily operations of the program such as travel. That season, Lehigh knocked down 42.3 percent of its three-pointers, leading the nation and almost a full percent better than any other team in the country. It also marked a Patriot League record. The Mountain Hawks finished the year 20-11 and 12-6 in league play, their fifth straight season with 10+ Patriot League victories. Lehigh also finished top four in the league standings and earned a home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The Mountain Hawks did not lose two straight games all season, showing strong resiliency and an ability to bounce back. In the Patriot League opener at Holy Cross, Lehigh erased an 18-point deficit to beat the Crusaders in overtime, the largest comeback in head coach Brett Reed’s head coaching tenure. Less than a month later, Lehigh went on to erase a 19-point deficit at Army West Point.
Â
Dunn continued in the same role in 2019-20, serving as an important resource for the program. On the court, the Mountain Hawks fought through some early struggles, but never quit and finished the season 6-3 over their final nine games. It included wins over three of the four eventual Patriot League semifinal teams, and a home Patriot League Tournament victory over Loyola. It was the 10th time in 11 seasons Lehigh hosted at least one PLT contest. The Mountain Hawks won their final three regular-season contests, which included topping Bucknell in a wire-to-wire Senior Day win (69-60). Three days later, Lehigh picked up a hard-fought 57-55 overtime win over Boston University, handing the eventual league champion Terriers what proved to be their final loss of the season.
Â
In the shortened and atypical 2020-21 season (due to the COVID pandemic), Marques Wilson was named third team All-Patriot League and NABC second team All-District, becoming Lehigh's first NABC All-District honoree since Tim Kempton in 2016-17, and just the Mountain Hawks' sixth different NABC All-District honoree in program history. Also during that season, the Mountain Hawks opened the season with a thrilling overtime win over archrival Lafayette, which included a long Wilson 3-pointer at the buzzer that led SportsCenter as Scott Van Pelt's best thing he saw today. Lehigh picked up an exciting road win at Loyola in February, against a team that went on to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game.
Dunn has worked locally in the Lehigh Valley in the game of basketball. He has served as assistant boys basketball coach at both Liberty High School and Allentown Central Catholic for five years each. Dunn was head girls basketball coach at Emmaus High School for three years and co-founder of Push The Rock in Emmaus, Pa. leading basketball camps and coaching internationally. The organization’s vision is to be a global leader in sports ministry.
Â
Dunn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Bible and Secondary Education from Cairn University, before going on to earn his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, also from Cairn. He went on to serve as a chaplain in professional sports for over eight years, including in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization. Dunn is currently a senior consultant with The Center Consulting Group. The Center Consulting Group provides strategic coaching and planning to leaders and organizations. He has also served as a professor at Cairn University in Organizational Leadership and Spiritual Formation Pastor at Faith Church.Â
