Lehigh Outlasts Texas State 78-74 In Overtime

11/29/2025 5:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball

LAS VEGAS – Lehigh men's basketball took the court against the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday in the Resorts World Las Vegas Classic consolation game. Junior Nasir Whitlock scored a career-high 31 points to help the Mountain Hawks defeat the Bobcats 78-74 in overtime.

"It was a really hard-fought battle, give a lot of credit to Texas State," said Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed. "We maintained our poise, continued our fight, saw a great individual performance and a lot of teamwork as well."

The Resorts World Las Vegas Classic, played at the Resorts World Las Vegas casino and hotel, is a four-team neutral site tournament featuring Lehigh (3-6), Texas State (6-4), UC Santa Barbara and Seattle University. The Mountain Hawks squared off against UC Santa Barbara on Friday, falling by a narrow 72-70 margin while Texas State lost 66-52 to Seattle.

The Bobcats scored buckets on their first two possessions before Whitlock responded with a triple to make it 4-3. Texas State was effective scoring inside in the early going, extending their lead to 12-7 at the first media timeout. The Mountain Hawks found success beyond the arc, using triples from Peter Kramer, Jake Pike, and Joshua Ingram to tie the game at 16 with 11:02 to go.

Trailing 22-21, the Mountain Hawks conducted a 7-0 run to take a six-point advantage at the 5:32 mark. The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 run of their own to regain a 30-28 lead with under two minutes remaining in the half. Whitlock then buried his second and third triples of the first half to send the game to the locker room tied 34-34.

The two teams traded baskets to begin the second half, with Texas State leading 39-38 at the 15:40 mark. Whitlock continued to stay hot throughout the first ten minutes, using a personal 5-0 run to put Lehigh ahead 45-42. Two triples from first-year Andrew Urosevic helped Lehigh keep pace and tie the game at 51-51 at the under eight media timeout.

The Mountain Hawks and Bobcats kept within a possession of one another until Texas State took a four-point advantage with 3:34 to play. Another Whitlock triple and fastbreak layup from Ingram pushed the Mountain Hawks back in front at the 2:25 mark, prompting a Bobcats timeout. After a Texas State bucket, Caleb Thomas knocked down a corner three that put Lehigh back on top 64-62 with under two minutes left.

With the game tied 64-64, Texas State's DJ Hall scored inside with 7.3 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats the lead. After the Bobcats had a foul to give, Whitlock drilled a pull-up mid-range shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Whitlock and Alvey got things started in overtime with buckets to put Lehigh ahead 72-69 with under three minutes remaining. Texas State found opportunities at the line, hitting four straight free throws to regain a 73-72 lead. Whitlock then responded with a pair from the charity stripe to put Lehigh ahead. After the Mountain Hawks forced a stop defensively, the Bobcats were forced to foul, and Thomas and Whitlock went perfect from the line to seal the victory.

Lehigh shot the ball at a very high rate, making 50% (29-58) of its field goals and 52% (13-25) of its three pointers. Texas State posted shooting splits of 43.5% (27-62) from the floor, 33.3% (2-6) from three and 78.3% (18-23) from the free throw line. Despite being outrebounded in the game, Lehigh's fast break points (13) and perimeter shooting proved to be the difference.

Whitlock posted his best game to date as a Mountain Hawk, scoring a career-high 31 points with five made threes and two assists.

"Nasir was hard to stop," said Reed. "He stayed low, he stayed strong, he finished in the paint and obviously knocked down perimeter shots. The way in which they gamble out on the perimeter, it was important for us to have a guard who could make some plays today."

Ingram added 11 points, four rebounds and two assists while Thomas impressed with ten points and a team-high four assists. Kramer scored nine points with three made triples. Alvey had eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Urosevic chipped in six points while Pike added three points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Bobcats were led by Hall with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Mark Drone (15p) and Kaden Gumbs (11p) joined him in double figures.

The Mountain Hawks will play one more game on the road on Tuesday, December 2 at 6 p.m. against Binghamton University before returning to Stabler Arena on Saturday, December 6 at 5 p.m. to take on LIU.
