The 2021 season will mark Mike Garzillo’s ’16 fourth season on the Lehigh coaching staff. His primary duty is to serve as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Mountain Hawks.
Garzillo returned to his alma mater after spending two seasons in the Miami Marlins farm system. The former Lehigh second baseman spent his professional career with the GCL Marlins in the Gulf Coast League and the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League. Garzillo was initially selected in the 38th round by the New York Yankees in the 2016 MLB Draft, but returned to Lehigh for his senior year and was drafted for a second time when the Miami Marlins selected him in the 25th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He is the only player in Lehigh history to be drafted multiple times.
A 2015 Baseball America All-American, Garzillo is one of the most accomplished and decorated players to ever wear the Brown and White. The 2016 Patriot League Player of the Year and 2015 Patriot League Tournament MVP, Garzillo is the only three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection in Lehigh history. He earned ABCA First Team All-Region honors in 2015 and was named the NCBWA District I Player of the Year that same season. Garzillo also earned a spot on the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament team as he led the Mountain Hawks to their second-ever NCAA postseason appearance and Patriot League title in 2015.
At the conclusion of his four-year career, Garzillo set new program career records in hits (236), doubles (60 – also a Patriot League record), games played (205) and at bats (746), while ranking second in career RBI (140), home runs (22), triples (10) and runs scored (145). He also owns the single-season records for at bats (56) and home runs (13), while ranking in the top-five for at bats, hits, doubles, RBI and runs scored.
Garzillo was also a model of success off the field as he was the first player in program history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection. At the end of his senior year, Garzillo earned several of the Lehigh Athletics department's top awards as he was named the 2016 Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which is considered to be the most prestigious honor awarded to a student-athlete in the department. He also was named the recipient of the John A. Cable Leadership Award, given to the department's top male leader. He also received department’s Sportsmanship Award and Distinguished Achievement Award.
A Nazareth, Pa. native, Garzillo earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Lehigh in 2016.
