Mountain Hawks Compete at Penn Relays, Host Carol and John Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On the final weekend before the Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh track and field team hosted the Carol and John Covert Classic at the Goodman Campus Track and Field Complex. The Mountain Hawks also sent several athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The weekend action was highlighted by six event wins at the Covert Classic.

PENN RELAYS
Action kicked off Thursday with senior Patrez Thomas running 53.29 in the 400m hurdles. On Friday, senior Liam Lovering posted a mark of 47.65m in the discus and 15.47m in the shot put. Senior Greg Stagliano finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 58.31m.

The 4x400m relay team of first-year Tyler VerSchure, sophomore Logan Haverkamp, first-year Austin Iburg and senior Ethan Hood qualified for the finals in the Eastern division with a time of 3:21.20. The 4x100 team of Verschure, sophomores David Sedrak and Gabriel Mays-Sanchez and first-year Jaden Green ran 47.11.

COVERT CLASSIC
Throws
Lehigh athletes went 1-2 and claimed five of the top six spots in the javelin, led by first-year Harry Keen (62.68m). Junior Wil Jaques finished second with a throw of 62.31m. Senior Liam Campiglia finished fourth with a PR of 55.93m, while senior Hunter Rodarmel (55.55m) and sophomore Gavin Chamberlain (55.08m) claimed fifth and sixth place.

Junior Joseph Nowakowski and Lovering went 1-2 in the shot put with Nowakowski throwing 15.81m and Lovering posting a PR of 15.65m. Lovering also took second in the discus (48.04m) while first-year Aaron Humes posted a PR of 46.25m. Senior Ethan McHugh led Lehigh in the hammer throw, finishing eighth with a throw of 45.75m.

Jumps
Junior Daniel Givens won the long jump with a mark of 6.59m and led Lehigh in the triple jump finishing third with a leap of 13.38m. First-year Jacob Chernin posted a PR in the long jump (6.13m) to finish fifth.

Junior Nick Rossi cleared 1.92m to finish third in the high jump.

In the pole vault, first-year Sayyidakbar Akbarov cleared 4.42m, a PR, to finish second. Sophomore Eli Johnson also cleared 4.42m and finished fourth.

Sprints/Hurdles
Lehigh had the top two finishers in the 110m hurdles, led by senior Jonathan Bennett in 14.73, followed by sophomore Nathan Oliphant (15.21).

Green ran 11.24 to finish 1th in the 100m, and Iburg led Lehigh in the 200m, running a 23.52. Mays-Sanchez ran a PR of 23.70 in the 200 and also ran 52.22 in the 400.

Mid-Distance/Distance
Lehigh had the top four runners in the 3000m steeplechase, including three PRs. Junior Connor Malinger won the event with a PR of 9:30.75, followed by sophomore Derek Coceano (9:32.22) and junior Henry Burd (9:43.72). Burd also won the 5000m in 15:49.56.

In the 800, junior Alex Heidemann finished third with a time of 1:53.69, followed by sophomore Aidan LaTourette with a PR of 1:53.74. First-year Ben Connell led Lehigh in the 1500m, finishing third in 4:02.93, while classmate Will Mrozinski's 4:06.45 was a PR.

The Mountain Hawks next will head to Worcester, Mass., for the Patriot League Championships, May 2-3.
