
Second Half Surge Lifts Lehigh to Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's lacrosse team battled to a gritty 12-9 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improved to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in Patriot League play, while the Raiders dropped to 6-6 (3-3 PL).
The game was tightly contested in the first half, but Lehigh pulled away in the final 30 minutes, outscoring Colgate 5-2. The Mountain Hawks carried a narrow 7-6 lead into halftime and never looked back.
Sophomore attackman Luke Winkler opened the scoring just two minutes into the game and delivered a career performance, finishing with six points on five goals and one assist. First-year attackman Colin French (3G, 1A) and senior midfielder Dakota Eierman (2G, 1A) also had strong offensive showings.
Colgate briefly held momentum in the first quarter, taking a 5-3 lead with 1:19 remaining, matching its largest advantage of the day. Casey Quinson restored a two-goal cushion for the Raiders midway through the second quarter, but Lehigh closed the half on a 3-0 run.
A key defensive moment came when junior defenseman Luke McAuliffe forced a turnover and quickly got the ball to Winkler, who found junior defender Richard Checo for the go-ahead goal just before halftime.
Although Colgate tied the game 7-7 early in the third, first-year attackman Chris Rathwell responded to give Lehigh an 8-7 edge, a lead the Mountain Hawks would maintain for the rest of the game.
McAuliffe was dominant defensively, posting a career-high five caused turnovers and collecting two ground balls. Checo added three caused turnovers of his own.
At the faceoff X, senior specialist Sean Dow had a standout performance, going 16-of-23 and grabbing nine ground balls. Lehigh held Colgate to just 8-of-25 on faceoffs.
In goal, sophomore Kasey Heath made 10 saves for the Mountain Hawks, matching Colgate's Matt LaCombe, who also recorded 10 saves.
Lehigh narrowly outshot Colgate 42-39, including a 22-19 edge in shots on goal.
Next Up, the Mountain Hawks head to Boston to face Boston University next Saturday at 12 p.m. in a nationally televised matchup on CBS Sports Network.
