Mountain Hawks Fall 6-4 At UMBC In Game Two

BALTIMORE – Lehigh baseball returned to Alumni Field on the campus of UMBC to play game two of their weekend series against the Retrievers. The Mountain Hawks took an early lead but ultimately fell by a score of 6-4.
Relief pitcher Ethan Ianni picked up his first win of the season for UMBC (2-7), allowing no hits or runs in 1.0 inning of work. Lehigh (4-5) reliever Liam O'Hearen was credited with the loss after conceding UMBC's go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. UMBC's Nick Remy picked up the save for the Retrievers.
After putting up 13 runs on 15 hits in Friday's win over the Retrievers, it looked as if Lehigh was on pace for another big day offensively in the top of the first. The Mountain Hawks scored four runs in the frame, kickstarted by Jake Whitlinger scoring on a bases loaded hit by pitch. A two-RBI single from Owen Walewander and a Jack Frankovic RBI single set the score at 4-0 through one.
The Mountain Hawks kept the Retrievers at bay all the way until the fifth inning, much in part to starter Cole Leaman. Before being replaced by Jake Mulvehill in the bottom of the fifth, Leaman allowed no runs on two hits while striking out seven batters in 4.0 full innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, two UMBC baserunners got aboard via errors, which allowed Derek Paris' double to send both past home plate. On the next two at bats, Kyle Eddington tripled and Ehi Okojie singled, both driving in runs in the process to tie the game 4-4.
The Mountain Hawks were retired 1-2-3 in the following two innings, giving UMBC the opportunity to take the lead in the seventh. After Jesiah Carpenter opened the bottom of the seventh with a hit, Paris singled him home to give the Retrievers their first lead of the day. A Danny Wyatt solo shot in the bottom of the eighth gave UMBC an additional insurance run. Remy retired the side in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Retrievers.
Seven Mountain Hawks recorded hits on the day, including a 2-4 outing from Ryan Cochran. Whitlinger, Justin Butler, Walewander, Frankovic, Raffaele Rogers and Ryan Davis also got hits for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude the series with game three on Sunday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m.
