O'Hearen's Complete Game Shutout Secures Doubleheader Split With Army

3/23/2025 6:52:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball returned to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park for another Patriot League doubleheader on Sunday, this time welcoming in the Army West Point Black Knights. The Mountain Hawks fell 12-3 in a seven-inning game one before a complete game shutout from sophomore Liam O'Hearen led Lehigh to a 2-0 win in game two.

Earning the win for Army (9-12, 5-3 PL) in game one was starter Bryce Brownlee after he tossed a complete 7.0 innings with four strikeouts, four hits and three earned runs. Lehigh (11-10, 1-3 PL) starter David Andolina received the loss after conceding three runs in the first two innings.

The Black Knights took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Addison Ainsworth scored Army leadoff hitter Chris Barr on an RBI groundout. The Mountain Hawks responded well in the bottom of the frame, as an Owen Walewander double to left field sent two runs past the plate to put Lehigh ahead 2-1. A Mark Abell RBI single and Thomas Schreck sac bunt gave the Black Knights a 3-2 lead through two.

The score remained 3-2 until the top of the fifth inning when William Parker's single through the left side scored Barr to extend the Army lead to two runs. The next play, Jake Whitlinger caught a fly ball in centerfield and made the throw to first for a double play, however, a catcher's interference was called that negated both outs. Jack Quinlan then homered to left field on the next at bat to put Army ahead by five runs.

In the top of the sixth, the Black Knights added five more runs to take a 12-2 lead and effectively put the game out of reach. First-year Edwin Betances connected on his first career home run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 12-3.

Walewander, Betances, Trystan Crawford and Bobby Kleckner recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks in game one.

O'Hearen was spectacular in game two, tossing a full 9.0 innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, five hits, zero walks and zero runs to earn the win. The loss was credited to Army reliever Kevin Reavey who conceded the two lone runs of the game.

O'Hearen started off the game hot, retiring the side 1-2-3 in his first two innings. On the other side, Army starter Joe Valchar kept the Mountain Hawks at bay, only allowing two hits through 3.1 innings.

The Lehigh offense finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Davis started things off with a leadoff single followed by a Whitlinger walk to put two on with no outs. A Dom Patrizi groundout RBI allowed Davis to score to get Lehigh on the board. Ryan Cochran then singled Whitlinger home to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead through five innings.

O'Hearen continued to work beautifully in the latter innings, keeping the lid shut on the Black Knights all the way to the ninth inning. Parker would get aboard with a single to left center, but O'Hearen calmly retired the final two batters to secure the doubleheader split.

Aidan Quinn was excellent offensively for Lehigh, batting 3-4 in game two. Whitlinger, Cochran and Davis also got hits in game two for the Mountain Hawks.

The Mountain Hawks will play next on Tuesday, March 25 against Rider University in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
