Lehigh Edged by Navy in Patriot League Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's tennis suffered a 6-1 defeat to Navy in its Patriot League opener on Saturday morning at the Lewis Tennis Courts. The Mountain Hawks fell to 7-4 (0-1 PL), while the Midshipmen improved to 11-9 (1-0 PL).
"A 6-1 score doesn't tell the whole story," said head coach Sophia Geier." Two matches went the distance and could have swung our way. We were right there - competing, battling, pushing to the very end. The margin is small, and that's fuel for what's tomorrow."
Audrey Harrington and Hamsa Javgal secured Lehigh's first doubles win, defeating Mary Bellia and Grace Li 6-1, however, Navy won the next two doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. From there, the Midshipmen dominated, taking the next three singles matches to seal the victory.
Maggie Forkner earned the Mountain Hawks' lone point, winning 6-1, 7-5 against Grace Li in the No. 2 singles spot.
Alina Shyani and Ronit Khromchenko both fell in three-set matches. Shyani dropped the first set 6-4 but fought back to win the second set 6-2. Unfortunately, she lost a close third set 7-5.
Khromchenko won the first set 6-2, but couldn't maintain her momentum, falling 6-4, 7-5 in the following sets.
Lehigh will return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Boston University at Randall's Island, N.Y.
