
Mountain Hawks Drop Heartbreaker to Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh men's lacrosse suffered a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to Bucknell Saturday afternoon at Christy-Matthewson Memorial Stadium. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 2-6 overall (1-2 PL), while the Bison improved to 4-5 (2-2 PL).
Bucknell's Will Pickering was called for a penalty with 59 seconds remaining, giving Lehigh an extra-man opportunity. However, the Mountain Hawks couldn't capitalize on the chance to tie the game, as they turned the ball over with just four seconds left. Despite having four shots on the EMO, none of them found the back of the net, with every attempt going wide.
The first half was marked by runs from both teams. Lehigh opened the scoring just 17 seconds in, as Colin French found the back of the net. EJ Vasile extended the lead to 2-0 four minutes later. Bucknell responded with a goal 30 seconds after Vasile's, but Lehigh went on another 2-0 run, taking a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Andrew Kelly opened the scoring to give Lehigh its largest lead of the game at 5-2 with 12:57 remaining. However, the Bison answered with a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Grant Rodny tied the score at 6-6 just before halftime with a goal in the final 3.7 seconds.
Bucknell took control in the third quarter, going on a 5-1 run to extend their lead. Lehigh fought back in the fourth, scoring three unanswered goals to pull within one, but they couldn't find the equalizer, falling just short.
Kelly led the Mountain Hawks with a team-high four points (2G, 2A), while French (2G) and senior midfielder Dakota Eierman (2G) also contributed multiple points.
For the third straight week, senior faceoff specialist Sean Dow was dominant, winning 18-of-28 faceoffs and scooping up a game-high 12 ground balls. Junior Johnny Kidd won 1-of-2 faceoffs.
Lehigh held a 45-35 advantage in shots and a 23-22 edge in shots on goal. In net, sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Heath made 11 saves, while Bucknell's Luke Renaud recorded 13 saves.
Lehigh committed 19 turnovers, while Bucknell finished with 13. Junior defenseman Luke McAuliffe led the team with two caused turnovers.
For Bucknell, Michael Meyer (1G, 2A) and Anthony Panetti (2G, 1A) both recorded a team-high three points.
Next up, Lehigh will host Loyola on March 29 at 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
