Mountain Hawks Bounce Back in Win over LIU

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's tennis returned to its winning ways with a 5-2 victory over LIU Sunday morning at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Sharks fell to 1-5.
"As a team, we showed mental toughness today," said head coach Sophia Geier. "There were a lot of momentum shifts, and credit to our opponents for putting up a big fight, but our players did a great job staying composed and finding solutions in tough moments. We adjusted when we needed to, stayed confident under pressure, and that made the difference in some matches. I'm proud of the way we competed to earn this 5-2 win."Â
Lehigh continued its strong doubles play, securing the first point of the match with victories from Maggie Forkner and Allyce Gaborik, as well as Ronit Khromchenko and Skye Yonehara.
Hamsa Javagal clinched the first singles point for Lehigh with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win over Jenna Svatos at the No. 3 singles spot. Forkner put Lehigh up 3-0, defeating Lucia Garrigues Melendez 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot. Giselle Vlassis sealed the victory for the Mountain Hawks at No. 5 singles, defeating Beatriz Verdial 6-2, 6-3.
Khromchenko won her second match of the day, dominating Isadora Fernanda Muller 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Alina Shyani dropped a tough three-set match. She won the first set 7-6 but fell 7-6 in the second and 7-5 in the final set at No. 2 singles. Gaborik also fell in a three-set match, winning the first set 7-5 but losing 6-0, 6-1 in the final two sets.
Next up, Lehigh will travel to Riverside, Calif., to face UC Riverside on March 10 at 12 p.m.
