IRVINE, Calif. – Lehigh women's tennis faced a 6-1 defeat against UC Irvine on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks dropped to 6-3, while UC Irvine improved to 7-5.
"Today's 6-1 score doesn't tell the full story. " said head coach Sophia Geier. "We had some really competitive battles across the board - multiple matches went three sets or came down to a few key points. Each court had chances, but credit to UCI, they were a bit more solid in the big moments and their experience playing outdoors showed. Still, I am proud of the way our group competed and continues to push forward."
Sophomore Maggie Forkner secured Lehigh's only point at No. 2 singles, earning a hard-fought three-set victory against Carolyna Fowler. Forkner won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-2, but bounced back with a dominant 6-1 win in the third to clinch the point for Lehigh. She was one of two Mountain Hawks to go three-sets in their singles contests.
Alina Shyani, competing at No. 3 singles, won the opening set against Yen Nhi Huynh 6-2 but couldn't maintain the momentum, dropping the next two sets 6-1 and 6-3.
In doubles play, UC Irvine swept all three matches. Down 5-2 at No. 3 doubles, the duo of Hamsa Javagal and Harrington mounted a comeback, closing the gap to 5-4, but UC Irvine ultimately secured the 6-4 win to complete the doubles sweep.
Next, Lehigh will wrap up its spring break trip on Thursday with a match against Concordia University Irvine, scheduled for 10 a.m. PT.
