IRVINE, Calif. – Lehigh women's tennis wrapped up its spring break trip with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Concordia University Irvine on Thursday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks improved to 7-3 on the season while the Eagles fell to 10-5.
"Another gritty 4-3 win today," said head coach Sophia Geier. "We battled tough conditions and had to bounce back after dropping the doubles point. The team came out strong in singles and showed a ton of clarity in the way they wanted to play—we dug deep, stayed tough, and found a way."
The Eagles claimed the doubles point, putting Lehigh in an early deficit. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Audrey Harrington and Hamsa Javagal cruised to a 6-1 victory. However, Magge Forkner and Allyce Gaborik lost 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Ronit Khromchenko and Alina Shyani fell 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Lehigh responded strongly in singles. Javagal earned the first point for Lehigh, securing a 6-2, 7-6 win at the No. 1 singles spot. Shyani put the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-1 with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
Forkner fought hard but was defeated in a tough three-set match. After taking the first set 6-3, she dropped the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. Giselle Vlassis gave Lehigh a 3-2 lead by battling through a three-set match. Vlassis won the first set 6-3, lost the second 6-2, but bounced back to claim the final set 6-3.
Hannah Letzer suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 6 singles, but the match ultimately came down to Khromchenko, who clinched the win for Lehigh with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Pia Starnecker at the No. 5 singles spot.Â
Next, Lehigh will open Patriot League play against Navy on March 22 at home.
