Second Half Surge Propels Lehigh to Win over Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Lehigh men's lacrosse earned its first win of the season with a dominant second-half performance, defeating Villanova 10-7 on Friday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Mountain Hawks improved to 1-4, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3.

Trailing 6-4 with 7:39 remaining in the second quarter, Lehigh scored six unanswered goals and held Villanova scoreless for 32 minutes, including the entirety of the third quarter.
Sophomore attackman Luke Winkler started Lehigh's 6-0 run with a goal six minutes before halftime, cutting the deficit to 6-5 as the teams went into the break. Dakota Eierman tied the game at six just 90 seconds into the third quarter, but Lehigh was held scoreless for the next 10 minutes.

Three minutes before the end of the third quarter, junior midfielder Peter Theodoropoulos put Lehigh ahead 7-6, marking its first lead of the game. The Mountain Hawks would not relinquish the lead, closing the game with a 3-1 run. Sophomore midfielder Jack Archer scored Lehigh's 10th and final goal with 9:07 left, marking his first collegiate goal.

Lehigh had to play catch-up early, as the Wildcats opened the game with three unanswered goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kasy Heath had a stellar performance, finishing with 16 saves and a career-high 69.6% save percentage. Heath has recorded double-digit saves in every game this season.
Andrew Kelly (3G, 1A) and Luke Breslin (1G, 3A) led Lehigh with four points each, tying and setting career highs, respectively. Eierman (2G, 1A) and Archer (1G, 1A) also contributed multiple points.
Senior defenseman Raul Ochotorena was outstanding on defense, causing a career-high four turnovers. Junior defender Richard Checo (3CT), senior long-stick midfielder Timmy Kirlin (2CT), and senior short-stick midfielder Giovanni Procaccini (2CT) also had multiple caused turnovers. Checo also led the team with six ground balls.

Senior faceoff specialist Sean Dow won 9-of-20 faceoffs, while also scooping up five ground balls.

Lehigh held a slight 39-35 advantage in shots and a 23-22 edge in ground balls.

Villanova's Denis Fargione recorded eight saves in goal.

Penalties played a significant role in the game, with Villanova committing eight and Lehigh committing seven. The Mountain Hawks converted 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities, while the Wildcats scored on 4-of-7.

Next up, Lehigh will travel to Navy for its Patriot League opener on March 7 at 5 p.m.
