Lehigh Hosts Lafayette In The Rivalry, Presented By Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute

1/24/2025 4:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The season's first installment of The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute is upon us, as Lehigh men's basketball will host the Lafayette Leopards on Saturday evening. The men will tip-off at 7 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. tip-off for the women as part of a doubleheader at Stabler Arena.

The Rivalry dates back nearly 123 years, as the first meeting between Lehigh (6-12, 1-6 PL) and Lafayette (8-12, 3-4 PL) took place in the 1901-02 season. The Leopards lead the all-time series 149-97, but the Mountain Hawks have won six of the last ten meetings. Last season, the two teams met twice in the regular season and once in the postseason, all of which resulted in wins for Lehigh. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks knocked off the Leopards 76-61 in the Patriot League quarterfinals on March 7, 2024 in Easton.

If Lehigh wins, they would earn their seventh win of the season and improve to 2-6 in Patriot League play. Lehigh would extend its winning streak over Lafayette to four and Brett Reed's all-time record against the Leopards would move to 27-14.

Senior Tyler Whitney-Sidney and sophomore Nasir Whitlock both tallied 19 points to lead a shorthanded Lehigh men's basketball team on the road at American University on Wednesday evening, but a last second shot at the buzzer from AU's Lincoln Ball gave the Eagles a 68-67 win. In his first career start, first-year Edouard Benoit tallied nine points, four rebounds and an assist. Hank Alvey added seven points, a game-high seven rebounds and three assists.

The Leopards enter Saturday's contest having won their last game over Loyola Maryland 80-59, putting them in seventh place in the Patriot League. Head coach Mike McGarvey is in his second season at the helm of the program and has brought in a talented group of contributing freshmen including guards Alex Chaikin (11.7 ppg) and Caleb Williams (9.9 ppg). Senior center Justin Vander Baan leads the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and averages 3.19 blocks per game, which ranks second in the NCAA.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks welcome Navy to Stabler Arena on Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be listened to on Fox Sports 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
