Mountain Hawks To Face Navy Friday Night In Annapolis

1/15/2025 2:03:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - No. 21 Lehigh closes out a three-match road swing with a Friday night dual at long time EIWA rival Navy at Alumni Hall. The Mountain Hawks and Midshipmen will meet for the 105th time in Lehigh's second most-contested series in its most-contested EIWA rivalry. Lehigh opened the 2025 portion of its schedule by splitting two duals in central New York last weekend. The Mountain Hawks erased a 16-11 deficit, winning the final three bouts to defeat Binghamton 23-16 on Saturday and then battled No. 12 Cornell to a 5-5 split, with the Big Red winning the bonus point battle to edge Lehigh 23-19. Five Mountain Hawks went 2-0 in last weekend's action: juniors Sheldon Seymour (125) and Carter Bailey (141); seniors Malyke Hines (149) and Michael Beard (197) and graduate student Owen Trephan (285). Navy, like Lehigh, owns a 2-3 dual record. The Mids have spent most of the last month and a half on the tournament circuit.

149 No. 33/24 Malyke Hines (Sr., Kissimmee, Fla.)
157 Griffin Gonzalez (Fy., Lebanon, Pa.)
No. 30/30 Logan Rozynski (Fy., Sparta, N.J.)
165 Richie Grungo (Fy., Shamong, N.J.)
        Thayne Lawrence (Sr., Perryopolis, Pa.)
174 No. 29/NR Rylan Rogers (So., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho)
184 Caden Rogers (So., Lancaster, Pa.)
197 No. 6/6 Michael Beard (Sr., Reading, Pa.)
285 No. 9/9 Owen Trephan (Gr., Summerville, S.C.)

No. 19 Lehigh and No. 12 Cornell split their 10 bouts 5-5 Jan. 12 at Newman Arena but the host Big Red posted bonus points in four of their five wins to knock off the Mountain Hawks 23-19. Lehigh picked up bonus points by way of a pair of technical falls at 197 and 285 by senior Michael Beard and graduate student Owen Trephan. The Mountain Hawks also got big wins from junior Carter Bailey and senior Malyke Hines over ranked opponents at 141 and 149, respectively but a 4-0 stretch from 157 through 184 that included three bonus wins propelled Cornell to the victory. A third period escape gave Bailey a 1-0 win over No. 26 Josh Saunders at 141, while Hines scored a late takedown to nab a 5-4 decision over No. 18 Ethan Fernandez at 149. Junior Sheldon Seymour opened the dual with a one-point victory over Marcello Milani at 125.

Lehigh's first dual meet of 2025 came down to the very end. Trailing 16-11 with three bouts remaining, the 19th-ranked Mountain Hawks batted back to win the final three bouts, holding off an upset bid from Binghamton Jan. 11 at Events Center. The dual came down to the final bout at heavyweight with graduate student Owen Trephan, in his Lehigh debut, clinching the dual for the Mountain Hawks with a 9-1 major decision over 18th-ranked Cory Day. Trephan's win followed an overtime triumph by sophomore Caden Rogers at 184 and a technical fall victory by senior Michael Beard at 197. Lehigh also got early wins from juniors Sheldon Seymour and Carter Bailey and senior Malyke Hines, with Bailey winning by technical fall at 141.

In December, senior Malyke Hines made the decision to bump up from 141 to 149, where he debuted at the Sheridan Tournament and then wrestled his first two duals at the new weight class at Binghamton and Cornell. The 2021 EIWA Champion at 133, Hines moved up to 141 prior to the 2022-23 season and his a four-time NCAA qualifier across the two weight classes. Hines is 6-2 in official bouts since moving up to 149, winning the Sheridan Tournament title and then going 2-2 at the Midlands Championships. A 5-4 decision over Cornell's top 20 Ethan Fernandez on Jan. 12 helped move Hines into the national rankings at his new weight class.

Lehigh has sent wrestlers to six open tournaments so far this season. The Mountain Hawks sent 21 men to the Nov. 3 Princeton Open and most recently had an 11-wrestler contingent at the Jan. 10 David H. Lehman F&M Open. Lehigh has 27 place winners over six tournaments with nine tournament titles won. Senior Max Brignola has won three tournaments competing unattached and was one of three Lehigh champions at F&M.

Navy will wrestle its first dual since Dec. 21 when it hosts Lehigh. The Midshipmen are 2-3 with EIWA wins over Drexel and American and losses to nationally-ranked Pitt, North Carolina and Iowa State. Navy has been busy on the tournament circut with large contingents at the Mat Town Open I, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Patriot Open, Soldier Salute and David H. Lehman F&M Open since the start of December. Two Midshipmen are ranked nationally by InterMat, led by senior Josh Koderhandt, No. 7 at 141. Koderhandt is coming off a title at the Soldier Salute in late December. Sophomore Danny Wask is ranked in the top 15 at 174. Cary Kolat is in his fifth season as Navy's head coach.

Navy is Lehigh's second most often-wrestled rival trailing only Penn State. Lehigh has won 12 of the last 13 duals with Navy's victory in 2021 in Annapolis snapping a nine dual winning streak in the series for the Mountain Hawks. Navy was Lehigh's second-ever opponent in Lehigh's inaugural 1910 season. Lehigh now leads the all-time series 56-48.  Pat Santoro is 14-2 versus the Midshipmen.

Friday's dual begins at 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The dual will be broadcast on Navy Athletics' YouTube Channel with Lehigh audio coverage on FOX Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM and LVFOXSports.com beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Lehigh will be off from competition next weekend and will return to action with two EIWA duals inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The Mountain Hawks welcome American Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. on Takedown Cancer presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; and then will host Army, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. on Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets.
