Mountain Hawks Drop 21-15 Matchup At Navy
1/17/2025 9:55:00 PM | Men's Wrestling
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In a tightly-contested battle, No. 21 Lehigh dropped the final dual of a three-match road swing 21-15 at Navy Friday night in Alumni Hall. A 2-1 decision by senior Malyke Hines staked Lehigh to a 15-12 lead with three bouts remaining, but Navy claimed the final three bouts by identical 4-1 scores to defeat the Mountain Hawks for the first time since 2021 and just the second time in the last 14 duals.
Â
Lehigh falls to 2-4 on the dual season and 2-1 against EIWA opponents, while Navy is now 3-3.
Â
The host Midshipmen claimed the opening bout of the dual as Daniel Williams won an 8-4 decision over sophomore Caden Rogers at 184. Rogers scored the opening takedown in the first period, but Williams scored takedowns in the second and third periods to take the victory.
Â
Lehigh won the next three bouts to take a 12-3 lead. At 197, senior Michael Beard picked up a 3-2 decision over Payton Thomas, but the first-year Midshipman frustrated Beard by holding him to a regular decision. Beard's points came by way of a second period reversal and third period stalling call.
Â
Graduate student Owen Trephan gave Lehigh the lead with his third bonus point win in as many dual bouts in a Lehigh singlet. Trephan posted a 17-2 technical fall over Ben Farabaugh with a takedown ending the match at 3:55.
Â
Junior Sheldon Seymour followed with a 10-2 major decision over Nick Treaster at 125 to give Lehigh a nine-point lead.
Â
Navy battled back to tie the dual at 12-12 with Brendan Ferretti pinning first-year Logan Wadle in the first period at 133 and then the Mids' top wrestler, No. 7 Josh Koderhandt winning 5-2 over junior Carter Bailey who battled through an injury to lose by just three.
Â
Hines used a second period escape and strong third period ride to defeat Kaemen Smith 2-1 at 149, putting Lehigh up 15-12 with three bouts remaining.
Â
Navy's finshing run started with a sudden victory win at 157 with Jonathan Ley scoring a takedown to beat first-year Jadon Skellenger 4-1, spoiling Skellenger's dual debut.
Â
A late third period takedown helped Navy's Dylan Elmore edge first-year Richie Grungo 4-1 at 165, giving the Mids an 18-15 lead going into the final bout.
Â
No. 14 Danny Wask closed the dual with a 4-1 decision over sophomore Rylan Rogers at 174, with Wask scoring the only takedown late in the second period.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will be off next weekend and will return to action with EIWA duals at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Lehigh will host American on Takedown Cancer, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. and then will host Army West Point Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. for Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets.
