Mountain Hawks Return To Grace Hall For Two EIWA Duals

1/30/2025 9:12:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a weekend off from competition, Lehigh returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall to host a pair of EIWA opponents. The Mountain Hawks will host American Friday for Takedown Cancer, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and then will welcome No. 24 Army West Point Saturday on Salute to Service presented by Weis Markets. Lehigh is looking to bounce back from a 21-15 loss at EIWA rival Navy on Jan. 17, where the Mountain Hawks held a 15-12 lead but lost the final three bouts, all by identical 4-1 scores. Five Mountain Hawks appear in the first NCAA Coaches' Rankings, released on Jan. 23, led by senior Michael Beard (197) and graduate student Owen Trephan (285) who come in at No. 6 in their respective weight classes.

Lehigh Probable Starters (Rankings FloWrestling/InterMat 1/28/25)
125 No. 17/12 Sheldon Seymour (Jr., Troy, Pa.)
         Logan Wadle (Fy., Pittstown, N.J.)
133 Matty Lopes (Fy., Danbury, Conn.)
141 Carter Bailey (Jr., Livermore, Calif.)
149 Kelvin Griffin (So., Berwick, Maine)
No. 33/26 Malyke Hines (Sr., Kissimmee, Fla.)
157 Griffin Gonzalez (Fy., Lebanon, Pa.)
No. 30/29 Logan Rozynski (Fy., Sparta, N.J.)
        Jadon Skellenger (Fy., Meridian, Idaho)
165 Zeke Dubler (Fy., Irvona, Pa.)
       Richie Grungo (Fy., Shamong, N.J.)
        Thayne Lawrence (Sr., Perryopolis, Pa.)
174 Rylan Rogers (So., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho)
184 Caden Rogers (So., Lancaster, Pa.)
197 No. 6/6 Michael Beard (Sr., Reading, Pa.)
285 No. 6/6 Owen Trephan (Gr., Summerville, S.C.)

In a tightly-contested battle, No. 21 Lehigh dropped the final dual of a three-match road swing 21-15 at Navy Jan. 17 in Alumni Hall. A 2-1 decision by senior Malyke Hines staked Lehigh to a 15-12 lead with three bouts remaining, but Navy claimed the final three bouts by identical 4-1 scores to defeat the Mountain Hawks for the first time since 2021 and just the second time in the last 14 duals. Navy won the opening bout before Lehigh reeled off three consecutive wins with a decision by Michael Beard at 197, a technical fall by Owen Trephan at 285 and a major decision by Sheldon Seymour. Hines' victory put Lehigh up by three with three bouts remaining, but the Mids claimed the final three bouts, winning all three by 4-1 scores.

Five Lehigh wrestlers appear in the first NCAA coaches' ranking, announced Jan. 23. The Mountain Hawks have two-wrestlers, Michael Beard and Owen Trephan, ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes, with Beard and Trephan ranked sixth at 197 and 285, respectively. The coaches' ranking is one of several criteria that will be evaluated by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee during the at-large selection and seeding process for the NCAA Championships. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. Wrestlers must have eight Division I matches in the weight class to be considered with at least one within the last 30 days. The second coaches' ranking and first RPI will be announced on February 13.

Kelvin Griffin's 2023-24 season was highlighted by his ability to pin his opponents. Griffin went 26-11 in his deferred first-year season with 15 wins by fall. Those 15 pins ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders and set a new program record for Lehigh first-year wrestlers. Griffin's 15 falls rank second overall in Lehigh single-season history, behind the 16 pins by Mark Lieberman in his second NCAA championship season in 1978-79. He has picked up where he left off so far this season with 15 falls among his 16 victories, leaving him one pin shy of the single-season record. The 15 falls are the most among Division I wrestlers.

Six Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from InterMat, FloWrestling and WrestleState, while four are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News and three appear in The Open Mat rankings. Sophomore Ryan Crookham was removed from two of the five rankings, but remains No. 1 at 133 according to the other three outlets. Senior Michael Beard (197), junior Sheldon Seymour (125) and graduate student newcomer Owen Trephan (285) are all ranked across the board, with Beard and Trephan ranked in the top 10 by all five outlets.

American brings a 7-6 dual record into Friday's action with the Eagles slated to visit Drexel at noon prior to their trip to Lehigh. The Eagles are 0-2 against EIWA opponents, with losses to Navy and Army West Point. Last weekend, American hosted the Chippewa Challenge at Bender Arena, going 1-2 with a victory over Central Michigan and losses to CSU Bakersfield and Campbell. Heavyweight Will Jarrell is the lone Eagle ranked by InterMat, coming in at 31 at 285. Raymond Lopez went 3-0 at 133 at the Chippewa Challenge, while Jarrell and Lucas White both won two bouts on Sunday. Jason Borrelli is in his fourth season as American's head coach.

Lehigh and American meet for the 11th time and the first time since 2020. The Mountain Hawks have won all 10 previous duals, dating back to the 2003-04 season, with an average margin of 30-10.5. The Eagles are visiting Bethlehem for the sixth time, with previous meetings at Lehigh in 2003, 2011, 2016, 2018 and 2020. Lehigh and American are Patriot League rivals in most other sports and Patriot Division foes within the EIWA.

Army West Point enters Saturday's dual at 6-2 overall and 3-1 within the EIWA. The Black Knights are looking to bounce back after suffering their first league loss at Bucknell, 21-13 last Sunday. The setback snapped a three-dual winning streak against EIWA foes. Army also won the Southern Scuffle team title in early January. Seven Black Knights appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by Gunner Filipowicz (165) and Lucas Stoddard (285) who are both ranked 18th. The other five ranked Black Knights all are ranked between 25-32 at their respective weights. Kevin Ward is in his 11th season as Army's head coach.

Army is Lehigh's fourth most-often wrestled opponent, trailing only Penn State, Navy, and Cornell. Saturday's dual will be the 73rd in the series, with Lehigh leading 59-10-3. Lehigh is 22-2-1 in its last 25 duals with Army. The Mountain Hawks have won eight of the last nine duals in the series. Lehigh and Army are meeting for the ninth consecutive season following a break in the series from 2010 through 2017.

Friday's Lehigh-American dual begins at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, while Saturday's Lehigh-Army match is set for a 2 p.m. start. Tickets to both duals are available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.

Lehigh heads to Lewisburg, Pa. next Friday to face Bucknell in its final EIWA dual of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks head to Davis Gym having won the last eight duals in the series. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start on Feb. 7.
