Lehigh Kicks Off 2024 Campaign With 2-0 Loss To Maryland

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Opening the 2024 season, the Lehigh women's soccer team was edged by Big Ten foe Maryland 2-0 on Thursday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Many newcomers for the squad made their collegiate debuts, including Alyssa Heard and Summer Hill who earned starting nods.

Maryland took a 1-0 lead off a goal from Kennedy Bell in the 24th minute. In the 64th minute, the Terrapins' Delaney DeMartino capitalized on the second goal of the contest.Â

In the 68th minute, sophomore Aminah Baruwa responded with a solid shot attempt that was thwarted by Maryland goalkeeper Liz Beardsley. Baruwa had another look in front of the net in the 86th minute, but Beardsley made the stop and secured the clean sheet.

First-year Esther Brossard made her presence known in collegiate debut, leading Lehigh with seven shots, including three on goal. The Mountain Hawks outshot Maryland 14-6 over the 90 minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou played all 90 minutes in net, making two saves. Beardsley earned seven saves for the Terrapins.

Lehigh (0-1) hits the road for its first away matchup at Seton Hall on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m.
