BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball opened a three-game series against Holy Cross on Friday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 3-1 win at J. David Walker Field. The game was the first of five meetings between the Mountain Hawks and Crusaders this season.
Cole Leaman earned his second win of the season for Lehigh (21-19-1, 7-12 PL), tossing an impressive 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts and only one run conceded. Marcus Danchision entered in his relief in the eighth inning, allowing no hits through 1.1 innings to earn the save. The loss was attributed to Holy Cross (19-24, 9-10 PL) starting pitcher Alex Bryant, who struck out six while giving up seven hits in 7.0 innings of work.
"Leaman was outstanding today," said head coach Sean Leary. "We needed a strong outing today and he really stepped up."
The Crusaders were the first to get across home plate on the day. Holy Cross opened the game with an Alex Sandell single up the middle that scored Jack Toomey to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0 in the first inning. However, Leaman locked in from this point on, only allowing two hits over the course of the next seven innings.
With Leaman making quick work of the Crusaders on the mound, Lehigh found themselves trailing by one over the next several innings. That would change in the bottom of the fifth when Tyler Young crushed a ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. Justin Butler followed suit the next inning, sneaking a drive just inside the foul pole in left to give his team a 2-1 advantage.
After seven stellar innings from Leaman, the Crusaders finally got themselves in scoring position after a Chris Baillargeon double and walk to Toomey put two runners onboard for Holy Cross. Danchision entered the game and forced a line-out to third base to escape the jam.
Holding a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, Lehigh kept their foot on the gas pedal. Aidan Quinn led off the inning with a double to right center and an Andrew Kohl double sent him home to set the score at 3-1. Danchision quickly retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, putting a bow on Lehigh's seventh league victory of the season.
Quinn, Young, Butler and Kohl all registered two hits on the afternoon for the Mountain Hawks. Rafe Perich and Andrew Noone added Lehigh's two other hits on the day.
"Young, Butler and Kohl each provided clutch hits," said Leary. "It should provide our offense some confidence for tomorrow."
The Mountain Hawks return to action from J. David Walker Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. for game two of the series. The team will also be honoring its eight graduating players as part of Senior Day prior to the start of game two.
