Comeback Effort Falls Short In 7-6 Loss To Holy Cross On Senior Day

4/27/2024 5:31:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After earning a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday in game one of the series, Lehigh baseball returned to J. David Walker Field on Saturday for game two. The Mountain Hawks threatened a comeback late, but ultimately fell 7-6 to the Crusaders.

Lehigh baseball also celebrated Senior Day, with pregame recognitions and ceremonial first pitches taking place prior to the game. Riley Davis, Najir Glenn, Drew Morse, Andrew Nole, Lucas Rich, Tyler Thompson, Teddy Tolliver and Tyler Young were all honored as graduating players of the program.

Starting pitcher Danny Macchiarola earned the win for Holy Cross (20-24, 10-10 PL), striking out ten batters while allowing only two runs in 6.0 innings of work. Luke LeMond earned his fourth save of the season for the Crusaders after nearly giving up the tying run to the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the ninth. Tolliver started on the mound for Lehigh (21-20-1, 7-13 PL) and was credited with the loss.

After a scoreless first frame, Holy Cross got the game's scoring started in the second and third innings. A Connor Cooney double in the top of the second scored the game's first run while the Crusaders batted in four runs off two hits and a sacrifice in the top of the third. The Mountain Hawks quickly found themselves facing a 5-0 deficit after three innings.

Lehigh would begin to turn the tides in the bottom of the fourth, scoring their first runs of the game in the frame. Andrew Noone got things started with a bases-loaded single to right field that scored Aidan Quinn. One batter later, Justin Butler scored on a wild pitch to set the score 5-2 in favor of the Crusaders.

Holy Cross' three-run lead stood for the next three innings, as solid play on the mound from the Crusaders and Lehigh reliever Julio Ermigiotti kept the score deadlocked. The Crusaders added an insurance run in the eighth when Jimmy King stole third and advanced home on a throwing error. However, the Mountain Hawks weren't going out without a fight.

Lehigh's rally began in the bottom of the ninth when a massive Quinn double to left center plated Young for the team's third run. A Raffaele Rogers sac-fly scored Quinn later in the inning, cutting the deficit to two runs. Despite their efforts, the Crusaders were able to respond in the top of the ninth with an RBI single from John LaFleur that put Holy Cross back up by three.

Needing three runs to extend the game, the Mountain Hawks opened the bottom of the ninth with a runner on base after Davis was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout from Sam Holtz in the next at bat, Ryan Cochran doubled to right field to put a run in scoring position for Lehigh. A Jake Whitlinger sac-fly would send Davis home, and a subsequent Young double to left center allowed Robbie Carvelli to bring the Mountain Hawks within one. However, LeMond forced Quinn into a groundout on the final play to seal the win for his team.

Quinn and Butler each recorded multiple hits for the second consecutive game, while Whitlinger, Young, Noone, Holtz and Cochran also provided hits for the Mountain Hawks.

The series rubber match between Lehigh and Holy Cross will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. from J. David Walker Field.
