Lehigh Defeats Mount St. Mary's In Game One, Game Two Postponed To Sunday

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Lehigh baseball began a three-game series against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers with a doubleheader on Friday. The Mountain Hawks took game one by a score of 3-2 while game two was postponed at the conclusion of the ninth inning due to darkness.
Cole Leaman started on the mound in game one, but only faced one batter before he was replaced by Marcus Danchision. The right-handed junior tossed 5.1 innings before Jack Hamilton entered in his relief. Hamilton would earn the victory for Lehigh (8-3) while sophomore Tommy Lamar picked up his third save of the season.
"Danchision continued his outstanding pitching today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He came into a difficult situation and carried our team through five innings. Hamilton and Lamar were also terrific on the mound."
The Mountaineers (1-10) opened game one with an RBI single off the bat of Jayson Kramer, giving them a 1-0 lead. Mount St. Mary's built upon that lead in the second inning courtesy of an Efrain Correa Jr. solo home run, quickly building a 2-0 lead over the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh's offense took a minute to get going, as the Mountain Hawks were retired in order in each of the first four innings. The Mountain Hawks finally recorded their first hit of the day in the top of the fifth inning off the bat of Justin Butler, who doubled to lead-off the frame. He would come around to score later in the inning off of an error, cutting the Mountaineer lead to one.
After Danchision retired Mount St. Mary's in four batters in the bottom of the fifth, Lehigh was able to tie the game in the sixth. A Butler RBI single scored Whitlinger, setting the score at 2-2.
Pitching continued to dominate on both sides until the top of the eighth inning when the Mountain Hawks finally broke the tie. Aidan Quinn got aboard via a leadoff walk, where he was replaced by first-year Braydon Hubbard as a base runner. After Ryan Cochran got on base from a hit by pitch, Rafe Perich grounded out to shortstop, allowing Hubbard to come home and give Lehigh its first lead of the day.
Now in possession of the lead, Leary turned to Tommy Lamar to secure the final six outs for the Mountain Hawks. Lamar retired the side 1-2-3 in the eighth before closing out the Mountaineers in four batters in the ninth to secure the win and his third save of the year.
"Our pitching has really been battling and they have led us to the last five wins," said Leary.
While game one was predicated on excellent pitching, game two can only be described as a slug fest. Lehigh and Mount St. Mary's combined for 31 total hits through nine full innings, scoring 10 runs apiece. The Mountain Hawks used six pitchers to the Mountaineers' seven and only recorded two full innings without a run being scored.
First-year Julio Ermigiotti made his first-career start off the heels of his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week award of the season. He allowed the first two runs of his career through 2.0 innings pitched.
Trailing 2-1 after two innings, the Mountain Hawks exploded for six runs in the top of the third. Perich got things started with an RBI single that scored Andrew Noone. Butler continued to stay hot, connecting on a three-run homer to give Lehigh the lead. An Andrew Kohl RBI double combined with a Noone groundout RBI set the score 7-2 after the top of the third.
The Mountaineers tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the third before the ultimate 'déjà vu' moment took place for the Mountain Hawks. Butler once again sent a three-run homer out of the park in back-to-back at bats. Lehigh now led 10-3 through three and a half innings.
Unfortunately for the Mountain Hawks, Butler's shot was their final score of the day. Slowly but surely, Mount St. Mary's crawled back into the game, scoring two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Down by one in the bottom of the eighth, the Mountaineers were able to tie the game off of a bases loaded walk. Neither team was able to score in the ninth, leading to extra innings. However, without lights in Mount St. Mary's stadium, it had become too dark outside for the game to continue, resulting in the postponement.
Game two will be resumed in the top of the tenth inning with the score tied 10-10 on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m. Game three will be played immediately after the conclusion of game two.
