BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball took the field at J. David Walker Field for the first time this season on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks hosted the Saint Joseph's Hawks, falling in an 8-2 decision.
Picking up the win for the Hawks (6-8) was Colin Yablonski, who threw two scoreless innings while striking out two. The loss was given to first-year Julio Ermigiotti, who conceded the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
Teddy Tolliver started on the bump for the Mountain Hawks (8-4-1), although he only pitched for a predetermined two-inning outing. David Owsik started for Saint Joseph's, tossing three innings while allowing the game's first run.
The game progressed rather quickly through the first two innings, as a total of 11 players came up to the plate in the first three half innings. The Mountain Hawks generated their first two hits of the day in the bottom of the second thanks to singles from Aidan Quinn and Tyler Young, but they would be left on base to keep the game scoreless.
Lehigh broke the tie in the bottom of third when Justin Butler grounded out to second base with one out on the board, driving home Ryan Cochran for the game's first run. Marcus Danchision, who entered in relief of Tolliver in the third inning, kept the Hawks off the board until Najir Glenn took to the mound in the top of the fifth. After retiring SJU in four batters in the top of the fifth, Owen Petrich hit a solo home run off of Glenn in the top of the sixth to even the score.
The Mountain Hawks were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth, which set up an opportunity for SJU to take the lead in the seventh. They did just that, scoring two runs in the frame off of an RBI single and a sac-fly. Lehigh was unable to score in the bottom of the frame, leading to a massive five-run eighth inning that stretched SJU's lead to seven. A Butler solo home run cut the lead to six, but ultimately the Mountain Hawks fell in their home debut.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Wednesday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. for a matchup with the Coppin State Eagles.
