BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League baseball season has begun, but before the Lehigh Mountain Hawks embark on their next league series against Army, the team prepares for the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday, March 26 against the Delaware State Hornets at J. David Walker Field.
The Liberty Bell Classic is an annual tournament amongst teams in the greater Philadelphia area that culminates in a championship game at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies. Lehigh is a one-time winner of the event, having beat the Villanova Wildcats in the 2004 final. Last season, the Mountain Hawks fell to the Wildcats in round one of the tournament.
Lehigh (14-8-1) played a four-game series against rival Lafayette over the weekend, splitting a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday. The Mountain Hawks took game one on Friday thanks to a go-ahead Rafe Perich grand slam in the final inning while dropping game two 6-4. On Sunday, the Leopards walked it off against Lehigh with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 7-4 while the Mountain Hawks rode great pitching and defense to a 2-1 win to conclude the series.
Delaware State (4-15) enters round one of the Liberty Bell Classic fresh off the heels of a three-game series against the Coppin State Eagles, which they dropped 2-1. The Hornets earned a 7-3 victory in game one but fell 4-3 and 7-2 in a doubleheader on Sunday. Sophomore Evan Bouldin leads the Hornets with a batting average of .329 while senior Chris Amparo leads the club with 18 RBIs.
Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and is set to begin at 3 p.m. Like Lehigh Baseball on Facebook, follow on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram for exclusive content, team updates and more.
