Lehigh Rolls Past Delaware State 14-3 To Advance In Liberty Bell Classic

"Our offense strung together a lot of quality at bats and they were able to stake us to a big lead," said head coach Sean Leary. "It was also great to see some of our bench players have strong games."
Starting on the mound for Lehigh (15-8-1) was first-year Grady Golier, who struck out two batters while allowing no runs through two innings. The win was awarded to David Andolina after he threw three scoreless innings in relief of Golier. Delaware State's (4-16) starter Hunter Thompson was credited with the loss after conceding seven runs through two innings.
"Andolina had a strong outing in earning his first win," said Leary.
Offense came early and often for the Mountain Hawks, beginning with a Justin Butler double that plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. RBI singles from Braydon Hubbard and Rafe Perich in the following inning quickly put the Hornets in a 5-0 hole after two innings.
After Andolina forced Evan Bouldin to hit into a double play in the top of the third, Lehigh's offense continued to roll. The Mountain Hawks scored five runs in the frame off of a passed ball, an RBI groundout from Andrew Noone, a Hubbard single, a Butler sac-fly and an Aidan Quinn single to center field. All of a sudden, Lehigh held a 10-0 lead through only three innings.
However, the Mountain Hawks weren't done. A three-run homer to deep left field from Andrew Kohl added three more, and a Perich solo shot to center put the cherry on top to set the score at 14-0.
The Hornets were able to get on the board with three runs in the sixth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Chris Amparo and Krew Bouldin. However, after Tyler Thompson retired the Hornets in four batters in the top of the seventh, the game was called.
The Mountain Hawks will face the winner of Rider vs. Villanova in round two of the Liberty Bell Classic next Tuesday, April 2. Time and location are still TBD.
Patriot League competition continues this weekend for Lehigh at home with a three-game series against the Army Black Knights. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 starting at 12 p.m. followed by one game on Sunday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
