Lehigh Splits Road Doubleheader, Series Against Lafayette

3/24/2024 7:05:00 PM | Baseball

EASTON, Pa. – After splitting a doubleheader with rival Lafayette to begin Patriot League play on Friday, Lehigh baseball returned to Kamine Stadium for another doubleheader with the Leopards on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks once again split on the day, dropping a seven-inning game one 7-4 while earning a 2-1 win in game two.

Senior Teddy Tolliver took to the mound in game one for Lehigh (14-8-1), tossing 4.2 innings before being replaced by Brandon Coughlin in the fifth inning. Coughlin picked up the loss after conceding the go-ahead run in the seventh while Luke Craytor was credited with the win for Lafayette (5-18).

The first inning came and went rather quickly in game one, as only seven batters across both teams saw at bats. Lehigh struck first in the second off of an Andrew Kohl single that scored Raffaele Rogers and followed that up with a Rogers RBI single the next inning to take a 2-0 lead after three.

The Mountain Hawks were retired 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, which made way for the Leopards to get on the board in the bottom of the frame. Lafayette's Michael Zarrillo connected on a single that advanced Blaze Fadio to third, and an error from Lehigh's left fielder sent him home to cut the Mountain Hawk lead to one.

However, Lehigh found two insurance runs in the fifth, as Tyler Young's bases-loaded single set the score at 4-1. Lafayette returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, tying the game 4-4 after a wild pitch and Fadio 2RBI single scored three runs. Neither team scored in the sixth, setting up an opportunity for both teams to take the lead in the final inning.

Craytor, who entered in relief of starter Tristan Helmick in the third, retired the Mountain Hawks in four batters to give his team a chance to walk it off. The Leopards did just that in the bottom of the seventh, as Fadio's three-run homer gave Lafayette the win.

Cole Leaman made his return to the Mountain Hawks' lineup in game two, throwing 4.0 innings in his first start since March 8. Najir Glenn was awarded with the win, striking out three while allowing no runs in 2.2 innings of work. Lafayette's starter Joey Pence was credited with the loss.

While scoring was harder to come by in the second game, Lehigh made sure to take a lead early. Andrew Nole sent Rafe Perich past home plate off of an RBI single in the top of the first to quickly score the game's first run. The Mountain Hawks added an additional run off of an error in the third, setting the score at 2-0 after the first two and a half innings.

The Leopards scored their lone run in bottom of the third on a sac-fly to cut Lehigh's lead to one. That's not to say that there were not scoring chances the rest of the way, as the Mountain Hawks stranded six batters after the third while Lafayette stranded nine after scoring their run.

Pitching and excellent defense told the story the rest of the way for Lehigh in game two. All three pitchers combined to allow zero earned runs while striking out 13 batters through nine full innings. Sophomore Tommy Lamar entered the game in relief of Glenn in the bottom of the seventh, allowing no runs through 2.1 innings to earn his team-leading fifth save of the season.

The two teams will meet again next month in Bethlehem for a midweek showdown on April 17 to decide the season series.

The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Tuesday, March 26 for their first game of the Liberty Bell Classic against the Delaware State Hornets. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Bethlehem.
