BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After earning their first home win of the season against Coppin State on Wednesday, Lehigh baseball took to Walker Field on Friday afternoon to begin a four-game series with the Saint Peter's Peacocks. The Mountain Hawks took the lead in the first inning and held it the whole game to win 6-1.
"Strong pitching and defense have been the formula to our success this season," said head coach Sean Leary following the win. "Raffaele Rogers provided a big spark for us today with his bat and his glove."
Earning his second win of the season was first-year Julio Ermigiotti, who tossed 4.2 innings in relief of Jack Hamilton, who started the game and threw 4.1 scoreless innings for Lehigh (10-4-1). Picking up his first loss of the season was Yash Jain, who allowed five runs in 3.1 innings for Saint Peter's (4-14).
"Hamilton and Ermigiotti pounded the zone today and our defense made key plays when we needed them," said Leary.
After Hamilton retired the side 1-2-3 to begin the game, the Mountain Hawks pushed the game's first run across the plate in the bottom of the first. Rafe Perich doubled home Jake Whitlinger from second base to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Peacocks' offense responded in the second after getting blanked to begin the game, as Saint Peter's recorded two hits in the frame. However, Hamilton was able to escape the jam to keep them off the board. Neither team was able to score in next few half innings, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of Lehigh.
The Peacocks hit into a double play and fouled out to end their chances in the top of the fourth, which made way for a massive Lehigh swing in the bottom of the fourth. The Mountain Hawks put up four runs in the inning, which was started by first-year Raffaele Rogers dashing home off of an error. A Perich RBI single and Justin Butler RBI double in the next two at bats allowed Lehigh to take a 5-0 lead after four.
Ermigiotti took to the mound in the fifth inning with one out on the board, and the first-year calmly collected the next two outs in order to head to the sixth. After retiring the side 1-2-3 in the sixth, Lehigh added an extra insurance run on an Andrew Kohl RBI single to take a 6-0 lead.
The Peacocks picked up their first run of the game in the top of the seventh off of an error that sent Ashby Vining home. However, three consecutive 1-2-3 innings from both sides quickly left Saint Peter's with only three outs remaining in the top of the ninth. Tyler Smith hit a leadoff single to begin the frame, but Ermigiotti collected the next three outs to seal the win for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will travel to Jersey City, N.J. on Saturday, March 16 to continue the weekend's series against the Peacocks. Lehigh and Saint Peter's will play a doubleheader with two seven-inning games, with the first slated to begin at 12 p.m.
