
Mountain Hawks Fall 11-7 to Delaware in Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Graduate student Gabby Schneider scored a hat trick in Lehigh's season opener against Delaware as Lehigh fell 11-7 to the Blue Hens on Friday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Olivia Memeger and first-year Molly Snow chipped in two goals apiece for the Mountain Hawks.

Schneider and Memeger started the season off on a high note, trading two goals apiece in the first half as the Mountain Hawks trailed 6-4 at intermission. Delaware had three different goal scorers in the first half with sophomore Jaclyn Marszal scoring her first two of the day.

The Blue Hens held Lehigh scoreless in the third quarter, as Marszal scored another pair of goals to give Delaware an 8-4 lead heading into the final quarter.

Delaware opened the fourth quarter with a two-goal run, with Marszal claiming her fifth goal of the young season. Marszal compiled seven total points, contributing two assists. In her collegiate debut, Snow responded with two goals to cut the Delaware lead to 10-6.

The Blue Hens added another before Schneider completed her hat trick as Delaware held on to secure the 11-7 win.

Lehigh held a 13-7 advantage in draw controls with graduate student Cassie Marte leading Lehigh with 10. Junior defender Julia DiConza anchored the defense, picking up three ground balls and causing two turnovers.Â

Senior goalkeeper Hayley Hunt made 11 saves, picked up four ground balls and caused one turnover on the day. Delaware goalkeeper Steph Marszal earned 14 saves in her first collegiate appearance in net.Â

Schneider, Memeger and sophomore Lauren Warfield each dished out an assist, with Warfield earning the first of her career. The Mountain Hawks' attack was 25 percent on the day, scoring seven goals off 28 total shots.

Lehigh hits the road next weekend, matching up with Jacksonville on Friday in Florida. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
