Lehigh Falls To Charleston Southern 17-6 In Game Two

2/24/2024 7:25:00 PM | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Lehigh and Charleston Southern took to the field for game two of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon after the Mountain Hawks claimed game one on Friday. The Buccaneers got the best of the Mountain Hawks by way of a 17-6 victory.

Evan Truitt earned the win for the Bucs (3-3), entering in relief to throw 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts while only allowing one run. Picking up the loss for Lehigh (3-2) was Brandon Coughlin, who conceded two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work.

Starting on the mound for the Mountain Hawks was Cole Leaman, who struck out seven batters in three full innings. He went up against CSU's Brett Gastman, who allowed five earned runs through 2.2 innings pitched.

The Bucs struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead off of a Chandler Tuupo groundout RBI. Justin Butler tied the game at one apiece the very next inning after hitting his fourth home run of the young season. An unearned run in the second inning gave CSU a 2-1 lead before Lehigh's bats came alive in the third.

The Mountain Hawks regained the lead in the third inning after scoring four runs in the frame. Lehigh's scoring got started thanks to a bases loaded walk followed by another run across the plate courtesy of Dom Patrizi getting hit by a pitch. On the next at bat, senior Andrew Nole doubled to left field, scoring two runs to give his team a 5-2 lead.

After CSU added two in the bottom of the third, the Mountain Hawks tacked on another run thanks to an Andrew Kohl RBI single in the top of the fourth. However, this would be Lehigh's last run of the game, as Truitt's excellence on the mound would help prevent the Mountain Hawks from adding more to their lead.

The Bucs evened the score at 6-6 at the conclusion of the fourth inning and used the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. CSU continued to hit the ball efficiently down the stretch, using a seven-run fifth inning and a two-run seventh to put the game out of reach for Lehigh.

The third and final game of the series will be played on Sunday, February 25 at 1 p.m.
