SHELTON, Conn. – After taking part in a scrimmage against each other last month, Lehigh rowing experienced live competition for the first time on Sunday at the Head of the Housatonic in Connecticut. The Mountain Hawks had multiple boats competing in the 8+ men's, 8+ women's, 4+ open men's, 4+ open women's and 2- open women's races.
"Racing today was really special and trying something different gave us an edge," said senior Jenna O'Dell. "We left it all out on the course and gassed ourselves like we've practiced."
The first race of the day for the Mountain Hawks was the 8+ men's race, which had three Lehigh boats in it. The first boat to finish for Lehigh, coxed by Laney Donnelly, came in fourth place out of 17 competing boats with a time of 13:54.5. Lehigh's boat coxed by Schuyler Joerger finished closely behind in fifth place at 13:57.0. The Mountain Hawks' final boat, coxed by Ellis Krush, placed 12th in 14:31.9.
"Rowing on the Housatonic was a great opportunity since it was a lot closer to home and I had the special support of my parents and the familiar New England fall foliage," said sophomore Ben Radoslovich. "There is definitely a sense of building momentum across the men's and women's programs which is exciting for what we can achieve."
"For it being the first race of the season, the team really came together and put out a great performance against some really high level teams," said sophomore Colby Brogan. "It was so exciting to see the hard work we've been putting in this fall in action. Lots of potential and good things to take away from this race."
The 8+ women's race was next, which featured two Mountain Hawk boats. The two boats finished in right next to one another in seventh and eighth place respectively out of 13 competing boats. The first boat finished in 15:30.8 while the second boat clocked in with a time of 15:35.2.
"My first collegiate race was really fun and it was exciting to see the moves and mindset that we've practiced pay off," said first-year Rachel Janoksy.
Next up on the docket was the 4+ open men's race, which had two Lehigh boats competing. The first Lehigh boat to finish earned 11th place (15:32.0) out of 22 boats while the second Lehigh boat took 14th place (15:51.8).
Lehigh then had three boats compete in the 4+ open women's race, one of which scratched prior to the start. Lehigh's first boat finished in eighth place out of 16 in 17:56.9 while the second boat took home 11th place with a time of 18:16.0.
"Racing with Lehigh for the first time was extremely exciting. It was incredible to see all our effort pay off in a race environment," said first-year Lee Ferguson.
Lehigh's final competition of the day was in the 2- open women's race. The lone Lehigh boat competing took second place out of three boats in 19:17.0.
The Mountain Hawks will next be in action on Saturday, October 26 for the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.
