BETHLEHEM, Pa. - As the baseball season hits its second half, six former Mountain Hawks are making their presence known in the professional ranks. Highlighted by promotions, awards and top performances, Lehigh baseball alumni are making their way up the professional baseball ladder. Â
Levi Stoudt was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2019, made his MLB debut on April 19 with the Cincinnati Reds. Stoudt has appeared in four games, making two starts. He struck out nine batters in 10.1 innings of work. He has made 13 starts for the Triple-A Louisville Bats, going 2-3 with a 5.56 ERA with 29 strikeouts and a 1.68 WHIP in 45.1 innings. Stoudt has now been called up to Cincinnati four times this season since debuting on April 19.Â
Mason Black is in his third season in the San Francisco Giants organization. A strong showing in Double-A Richmond has earned Black a promotion to Triple-A Sacramento. Black enjoyed an outstanding month of June in Richmond, posting a 1.27 ERA and striking out 25 batters in 21.1 innings on the way to being named Eastern League Pitcher of the Month. Black ended the month of June with four consecutive scoreless starts and was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week following a dominant outing against Reading. In two starts since his promotion to Triple-A, Black has struck out 14 in 10 innings of work, while pitching to a 2.70 ERA.Â
Mark Washington, a 2017 draftee, is a relief pitcher in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Washington is in Triple-A with Oklahoma City and has pitched in 28 games thus far with one start. He is 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA and has 41 strikeouts in 42.1 innings of work. Over six minor league seasons, Washington has appeared in 154 games, striking out 260 over 267 innings. He's knocking on the door to potentially give the Dodgers a late-season bullpen boost.
Matt Svanson, a 2021 draft pick, has excelled in A-ball in the Toronto Blue Jays system. Svanson began the season with three scoreless innings for Dunedin in the Florida State League before moving up to High-A Vancouver. Svanson has a 4-1 record and 1.32 ERA in 23 relief appearances for Vancouver and has struck out 34 batters across 27.1 innings. On June 11, Svanson recorded the final three outs of a combined seven inning no-hitter for the Canadians against the Everett Aquasox. He has a WHIP of 1.02 for Vancouver this season.
Catcher Adam Retzbach, a 2022 draft pick, is in his second season with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He has been playing for the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds where he owns a .222 batting average with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Retzbach has spent time on the Injured List and has played in six rehabilitation games for the Delmarva Shorebirds.Â
Carlos Torres, another 2022 draft pick, is in his second season in the Colorado Rockies organization as a member of the Single-A Fresno Grizzlies. Working as a reliever, Torres has appeared in 27 games, earning five victories while pitching to a 4.31 ERA. In 39.2 innings pitched, Torres has 33 strike-outs, eight holds, and a 1.36 WHIP.
