Mountain Hawks Record Win in Final Non-League Game with 15-1 Victory over Cairn

5/4/2023 7:23:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball squad (21-25) took down Cairn (19-18) by a score of 15-1 on Thursday afternoon from J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park in its final non-league game of the 2023 season.

The Mountain Hawks wasted no time getting runs on the scoreboard, doing so when sophomore Rafe Perich doubled to center to score fifth-year Casey Rother. Fifth-year Joe Gorla traded places with Perich when he doubled to right field for an RBI and gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Andrew Kohl crushed his ninth home run of the year in the second inning to push the Mountain Hawks' advantage to 3-0.

Lehigh tacked on four more runs in the third with a Perich triple to center field to score a couple of runs. First-year Trystan Crawford doubled to right-center field to plate a runner in the fourth with classmates Owen Walewander and Jack Frankovic plating a run each to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead to 10-0 after five innings.

Rother doubled down the right-field line to score two runs, passing Matt McBride '07 for the most RBIs in a single season (63), adding his name to the top of another statistical category in the Lehigh record book. First-year Greg Becil recorded an infield single to score another run as Lehigh led 13-0 after seven innings. Walewander picked up two more RBIs when he singled up the middle to conclude the scoring for the Brown and White, leading 15-0 heading into the ninth inning.

The Highlanders scored their first and only run of the game when Brooks Price reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Sam Spadea, putting the game at the final score of 15-1.

Twelve Mountain Hawks made up the 19 hits in the game, with Rother going 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and runs. Lehigh had five others record multi-hit performances with Perich plating three runs and scoring two of his own while Kohl had two RBIs and scored a couple of runs. Six other Mountain Hawks reach base safely in the game including Crawford's and Gorla's RBI doubles.

Four Highlanders accounted for Cairn's four hits, with Spadea scoring the lone run. Three pitchers toed the rubber for Cairn as Dylan Jackson (L, 1-2) made his fifth start of the season. He tossed two innings and gave up seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks before Ethan Fineman twirled 4.2 innings of work in relief. Fineman struck out three while allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits and a couple of walks while Bryan Stimpson threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout.

First-year Shane O'Neill (W, 2-1) made the first start of his career and tossed two innings with only one hit before the Mountain Hawks went to the bullpen. Lehigh used eight pitchers in relief with first-year Brandon Coughlin and senior Will Grisack combined for an inning's work before six other arms threw an inning apiece in the victory, holding the Highlanders to one run on four hits.

The Mountain Hawks will return to J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park on Saturday, May 6 when they host Army West Point in a Patriot League doubleheader on Senior Day. First-pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
