Mountain Hawks Edged 4-3 By Bucknell Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team dropped a tightly-contested 4-3 final to Bucknell on a cold Saturday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The visiting Bison won the doubles point 2-1 which was the difference as the teams split the six singles matches including three-set battles at the top two flights.

The Mountain Hawks are now 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League.

Doubles play began with sophomore Hamsa Javagal and first-year Bella Peters blanking Maddy Sebulsky and Caroline Markus at No. 3, but Bucknell picked up 6-3 wins at the top two flights to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bison went up 2-0 when Peters had to retire at No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Allyce Gaborik put Lehigh on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tyne Miller at No. 3 singles. Following a Bucknell win at No. 4, junior Anushka Dania won at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Kathryn Novak to bring Lehigh within 3-2.

The Mountain Hawks needed to win the top two flights to rally for the victory. Both matches went into third sets. Junior Megha Dania won the first set from Anna Lajos at No. 2, but dropped the second set in a tiebreak. Lajos won the third set 6-4 to clinch the match for Bucknell.

Javagal closed things out with a win over Whitney King at No. 1 singles after winning a third set tiebreak.

Lehigh will take to the road for two matches next weekend as the Mountain Hawks will visit Morgan State Saturday at 4 p.m. and then will face Boston University Sunday at 10 a.m. on Navy's campus in Annapolis, Md.
