BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball squad (18-21, 5-11 Patriot League) suffered an 8-7 loss in game one to Bucknell (12-11, 10-10 Patriot League) after two late rallies came up short before game two was suspended in the top of the seventh inning due to impending weather at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park Saturday. The Bison and Mountain Hawks will conclude the game at 12 p.m. on Sunday before playing the final game of the series approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion.
Game 1 – L, 8-7
The Bison wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, doing so with a couple of home runs. After the game's first two batters were hit by pitches, Grant Voytovich homered to left field to give Bucknell a 3-0 advantage. Anthony Sherwin went yard in the second inning with a solo shot to right-center field to extend the Bison's lead to 4-0 through two innings.
Fifth-year Casey Rother added another round-tripper to his stat sheet when he connected on a three-run home run to left field to bring the Mountain Hawks within one run after three frames, 4-3. In the fifth inning, the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, first-year Dom Patrizi scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and sophomore Rafe Perich homered to right-center for two RBIs and put Lehigh in front 6-4.
Bucknell went back in front in the top of the sixth when Voytovich blasted a grand slam to left field, his second homer of the game, giving the Bison an 8-6 lead. The Mountain Hawks had the bases loaded with two away in the bottom half of the frame, but the Bison got out of the jam after Rother hit line drive to third base, which saw Sean Keys make a diving grab to keep the score at 8-6 after six innings.
In the seventh, Lehigh got within a run when Perich crushed his second home run of the game to right-center field, but that's all that the Brown and White would get and Bucknell claimed the 8-7 victory.
Perich went 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs on two home runs, giving him his third and fourth home runs of the season while fifth-year Joe Gorla collected a couple of hits in the game, one being a double. Rother's lone hit was for his 15th homer of the year, extending his individual and career records, for three RBIs while Patrizi and fifth-year Gerard Sweeney each reached base on a hit.
Both Voytovich and Sherwin combined for six of the Bison's 11 hits and all eight of their runs with Voytovich hitting two home runs with seven RBIs and three runs scored while Sherwin with a solo homer for an RBI and scored twice. Five other members of Bucknell recorded base knocks in the game.
Both squads used three pitchers each, with fifth-year Luke Rettig making the start and throwing five innings of work for six runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. Rettig is now just five Ks away from becoming the record holder for career strikeouts. Senior Will Grisack (L, 2-3) threw an inning of work with two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts before classmate Ryan Deom tossed one inning with one hit and a walk.
Chris DiFiore (W, 4-5) got the start for the Bison after throwing five innings with six runs on five hits, six walks and four strikeouts. Theo Farynick threw a scoreless frame without allowing a hit and walked one before Ryan Osinski (S, 5) entered to close the game and did so with only giving up one run on two hits with two Ks.
