Lehigh Readies for Lafayette in The Rivalry presented by LVOI

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (11-14, 0-4 PL) is set to host Lafayette (5-20, 1-3 PL) for a four-game Patriot League series, starting tomorrow and concluding Sunday at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park. Friday's game is slated for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+. The Rivalry series is presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.

The Mountain Hawks are looking to get back on track this weekend after suffering their sixth straight loss to Villanova, 9-7, in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic. Eight different Mountain Hawks contributed to the 13 total hits in the non-league game, led by first-year Dom Patrizi going 3-for-4 with a run scored and driving in a run. Fifth-year Casey Rother, sophomore Andrew Kohl and junior Tyler Young each produced two hits on the day, with Rother connecting on the 24th home run of his career and team-leading 12th double of the season with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kohl had two base hits with an RBI and a run scored while Young had a double and plated a run. Four others recorded a base knock.

Lehigh used nine pitchers on Tuesday with sophomore right-hander Rafe Perich getting the start and recording a strikeout with three runs and three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Senior right-hander Ryan Deom tossed 1.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and struck out two Wildcats before first-year Anthony Gonzalez threw 1.2 innings with one run allowed on one hit and a strikeout.
Junior Andrew Nole currently leads the Mountain Hawks with a batting average of .368 while Kohl is hitting .352 and has a team-high seven home runs with 24 RBIs. Young is batting .342 while Rother has a .330 batting average with a team-high 12 doubles and 30 RBIs while also contributing seven home runs. Rother also became the sixth Mountain Hawk in the history of the program to reach 200 career hits, doing so with a RBI double on Tuesday. He then followed that up with a solo home run for the 24th homer of his career. Perich leading the squad with 34 hits on the year and has eight doubles and 24 RBI while fifth-year Joe Gorla is the last Mountain Hawk that is hitting over .300 with a .302 batting average and has four doubles and four homers.

Fifth-year pitcher Luke Rettig has thrown 24.2 innings this season and has a 4-1 record in six starts with an ERA of 1.85 and 29 strikeouts this season. He sits third all-time with 236 career strikeouts, just four away from moving into second all-time. Sophomore Alex Bouchard has also thrown over 20 innings, with 22 strikeouts in six starts and seven appearances while junior Teddy Tolliver has thrown 18 innings with 17 strikeouts in five starts and six appearances. First-year Shane O'Neill and senior Will Grisack have both tossed over 15 innings and made over 10 appearances on the mound.

Lafayette (5-20, 1-3 PL) is coming into the weekend game after defeating Penn in the Liberty Bell Classic opening round, 6-5. In league play, the Leopards were swept by Bucknell (11-0 and 20-2) and then split a doubleheader with Navy (W, 8-0 – L, 6-4) for their lone win in league action.Â
The Leopards are led by Michael Zarrillo, the only squad member that is hitting over .300, with a batting average of .324 with 24 hits, a pair of doubles, one triple and two home runs for eight RBIs and 10 runs scored. Kyle Chmielewski is hitting .281 and leads the team with six doubles and has plated 12 runs while Ben Patrone and Sief Ingram are both hitting over .240. Patrone has 15 hits and 10 runs scored while Ingram leads Lafayette with 25 hits and 104 at-bats with three homers, two doubles, two triples and 12 runs scored. Pete Ciuffreda leads the Leopards with eight home runs, 16 RBIs and has been walked a team-high 16 times.

Lafayette has two pitchers that have logged at least 21 innings pitched, led by Alex Walsh who has made four starts and appeared in six games with a 2-1 record. Walsh has thrown 28.1 innings with a team-leading 32 strikeouts and tossed a complete game. Luke Craytor has hurled 21.2 inning in six starts with 15 strikeouts and an 0-4 record while Trace Florio is the lone Leopard to make double-digit appearances, throwing 18 innings of action in 10 appearances with an 0-4 record and six strikeouts. Jacob Maurer and Adam Bogosian both have thrown 16 innings each with Maurer making four starts and eight appearances with 17 Ks and an 0-2 record while Bogosian has made three starts and appeared in nine games with an 0-4 record and 10 strikeouts.

The Leopards hold a lead in The Rivalry, 216-167-2, but the Mountain Hawks have won six of the last 10 games and are 3-1 at Walker Field in the last four. Last season, Lehigh went 2-3 against Lafayette after earning a 1-0 victory in the series' opening game in Easton, before the Leopards won the next three. Lehigh closed out the series at Walker Field with a 7-4 victory. All four games of the series this weekend will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Mountain Hawks will remain home with a single game against Delaware State on Tuesday, April 4 in a consolation game of the Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
