Lehigh Falls to Marist 4-3 in Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's tennis team took an early lead against Marist but was unable to overcome the Red Foxes, falling 4-3 in its season opener inside the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday morning.

The Mountain Hawks opened the match by winning the doubles point and taking the early 1-0 lead. Senior Junmoke James and sophomore Allyce Gaborik defeated Marist's Deana Giambo and Cloe Clements 7-5 at the No. 2.

Sophomore Hamsa Javagal and first-year Bella Peters secured the doubles point for Lehigh, defeating Andriana Zaphiris and Isabella Tonuzi 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.

Entering singles play with the early lead, Lehigh tried to keep the winning momentum going but Marist showed no signs of giving up. The Red Foxes picked up wins at the No. 1, 2 and 4 spots to claim the 3-1 lead.

Junior Megha Dania helped Lehigh close in on Marist's lead by picking up a win at the No. 3 spot. Dania defeated Clements 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 to help the Mountain Hawks get within one.

The Red Foxes secured the win at the No. 6 flight but Lehigh picked up its second singles win of the day to close out Saturday's match. Junior Anushka Dania defeated Tonuzi 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot.

Lehigh will close out the weekend with a Sunday morning match against Mount St. Mary's at 10 a.m.
