BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A statement win for deferred first-year Ryan Crookham highlighted a busy Sunday for the Lehigh wrestling team at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at Freedom High School. Crookham won a hammer award for claiming the 133A bracket in the round robin event. In his final bout, Crookham knocked off top-ranked Vito Arujau of Cornell, the defending NCAA champion and a recently-crowned world champion by an 8-4 score.
Â
In all, 18 Mountain Hawks competed on Sunday with Crookham leading the way for the six Lehigh wrestlers who advanced to the finals in the A brackets. The event featured no team scoring with most of the round-robin competition in three man brackets followed by a crossover match.
Â
Crookham's bout with Arujau saw the Big Red wrestler strike first with a takedown with 46 seconds remaining in the first period. Six seconds later, Crookham escaped and then the Mountain Hawk scored a takedown of his own to lead 4-3 after one period. Crookham escaped for the only points in the second period, while Arujau escaped 17 seconds into the third to get within 5-4. Crookham came out on top with his second takedown with 43 seconds remaining and rode out to preserve the victory.
Â
Earlier Sunday, Crookham defeated Lehigh teammate Connor McGonagle 6-3 in sudden victory, with Crookham picking up takedowns in the first period and then the winner in overtime. He also posted an 18-3 technical fall win over Jacob Cox of NC State.
Â
McGonagle bounced back from the loss to McGonigle to claim third place in his pool, with an 8-2 win over Penn's Michael Colaiocco in his final bout.
Â
Lehigh had six other wrestlers claim second place in A-level pools on Sunday.
Â
At 141, junior Malyke Hines had a pair of come-from-behind victories during round robin competition, first defeating Penn State's David Evans 6-4 and then rallying from 6-0 down to beat Penn's CJ Composto 9-6 behind a third period takedown and two point near fall. Hines dropped his third bout to Penn State's Beau Bartlett.
Â
Deferred first-year Kelvin Griffin picked up an early pin over Harvard's Jack Crook to make the finals at 149A before falling victim to a first period pin against Shayne Van Ness of Penn State.
Â
Junior Max Brignola won his first two bouts at 157, winning 10-3 over Penn's Lucas Revano and then posting a technical fall over Joe Cangro of Harvard. For the third straight weight class, a Lehigh wrestler ran into a Penn State Nittany Lion, with Levi Haines claiming a 10-2 major decision.
