BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Luke Stanich won a gold medal at the U20 Pan-American Championships Saturday in Lima, Peru. Stanich went 4-0 competing at 65 kg with all four victories coming via 10-0 technical falls. He wrestled into the second period just once in four matches and went on to win the Golden Boot as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.
Â
For Stanich and four other members of the USA contingent, the event served as a tune-up for the U20 World Championships next month in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Â
Stanich defeated Erick Vera Olave of Ecuador in 48 seconds, then bested Peru's Angel Ramirez Guardia in 1:10 and Mexico's Diego Peraza Aguilar in 1:09. In the gold medal match, Stanich won 10-0 in 4:01 over Yandro Soto Rivera of Puerto Rico.
Â
A NCAA All-American in 2024 as a true first-year, Stanich deferred his eligibility in 2024-25, going 12-1 while moving up to 141. He won Lehigh's Deferred Eligibility Wrestler of the Year award at the annual Lewis Dinner.
Â
Stanich was part of a dominant effort from the U.S. Men's Freestyle team in Lima. The USA contingent went 31-2 Saturday with eight gold medals and two bronze medals.
