Mountain Hawks Fall to Wagner in OT Barnburner, 8-7

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Nora Giordano evened the score with six seconds remaining, but Wagner's Kasey Dorney scored her fourth of the game with 1:04 left in overtime to give the Seahawks an 8-7 win over the Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Both teams' defenses and goalkeepers impressed, with just nine combined goals scored through the first three quarters, as each goalie finishing with 15 saves on the afternoon.

A game of runs saw Lehigh use a 3-0 surge to open a 6-4 early fourth-quarter lead before Wagner responded with three in a row, with the game ultimately being decided in an extra session.

Junior Katia Carnevale led Lehigh's offense with three goals, while classmates Emma Eberhardt and Gabby Schneider each dished three assists. Eberhardt scored a goal as well. The Mountain Hawks caused 15 of Wagner's 18 turnovers on the afternoon, led by three caused turnovers each from senior Emma McGillis and Schneider. Eberhardt had a game-high six draw controls, while junior Cassie Marte added five (to go with a goal and assist).

After the teams traded early goals, Wagner went into the second quarter leading 3-1. The Mountain Hawks began the second with two straight, then after Wagner scored with 19 seconds on the clock to take a 4-3 lead into halftime, Lehigh came out of the intermission with three in a row.

Giordano had a big answer, though, scoring from Marte with six seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.

For the game, the Mountain Hawks held a 30-29 edge in shots and 13-8 advantage in draw controls. Wagner finished with a 25-21 advantage in groundballs. Lehigh had 19 turnovers compared to the Seahawks' 18. Sophomore Hayley Hunt continued her stellar play, making 15 saves to improve her already strong save percentage to 59.6

The Mountain Hawks will now remain home on Tuesday to host Siena at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.

Early in the fourth, sophomore Olivia Memeger scored, from Eberhardt to break a string of nearly 15 minutes without a goal by either side. But Wagner answered with goals at 10:42, 5:10 and 2:16 to take a 7-6 lead into the final seconds.Hayley Hunt keeps the Mountain Hawks ahead 5-4 as we head to the fourth!
