DOVER, Del. – The Lehigh baseball team scored four runs in the first five innings off three home runs, but Delaware State used an eight-run outburst between the seventh and eighth innings to come away with an 8-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Bob Reed Field. The loss is the Mountain Hawks' (4-5) second consecutive as the Hornets (2-4) get a series victory after claiming Friday's opener.
Â
Junior right-hander Will Grisack (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs on two hits in a 1/3 inning. He relieved Nick Pave, who allowed the first four runs of the game in an inning of work. Senior lefty Matt Stamford was excellent in his start, tossing 5.2 shutout innings, scattering four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Â
Lehigh started the scoring in the top of the second inning after first year Justin Butler homered to right center field, his second of the season.
Â
Senior Casey Rother got his first home run of the season in the top of the third to extend Lehigh's lead to 2-0. In the fifth, first year Jake Whitlinger homered to right field, scoring sophomore Tyler Young to take a 4-0 lead.
Â
With Pave on the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning, Delaware State began to chip away at the deficit, starting with a two-out RBI triple to center field and followed by an RBI single to left field, cutting the Lehigh lead in half to 4-2.
Â
Pave walked a batter and hit another to load the bases, as Grisack took over on the mound. Grisack hit Krew Bouldin to bring in a third run and he advanced to second on a wild pitch which scored Miguel Rivera to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Hornets began the frame with a lead-off walk and followed it up with a single to center field. DSU took the lead on an RBI single from Mike Worthington, which put runners on first and second. Grisack hit Alan Alonso to load the bases as Ryan Deom came in to pitch in relief with no outs. Delaware State scored three more runs on an RBI single and two sacrifice flies to take an 8-4 advantage.
Â
Lehigh started to battle back in the top of the ninth after a lead-off single from Riley Davis. Young reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher as Davis advanced to second on an error. After Whitlinger flied out to left field, first year Rafe Perich singled to right to load the bases. Rother got another RBI on a ground-out to second which scored Davis and junior Adam Retzbach popped up to second to end the game.
