Mountain Hawks Have A Solid Weekend at Dr. Sander Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The women's track and field team has had a successful indoor season so far and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Mountain Hawks finished # at the two-day Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City over the weekend. Lehigh finished the two-day meet with eight PRs and 1 broken school record.

Leading the way for the Mountain Hawks was the distance medley relay team, made up of graduate student Kaja Skerlj and seniors Hetty McMillan, Julia Dorley and Jade Sessions. The relay group broke the school record from 2017 by 15 seconds on Friday (11:33.94). McMillan led the relay off to a strong start, running the first 1200 meters. Following McMillan was Skerlj, who ran an impressive time in the 400m leg of the race. Skerlj passed the baton off to Dorley, who ran a solid 800m for Lehigh. Sessions served as the anchor, running the final 1600m of the race in 4:52.23.

"The DMR has four seniors who know how to compete at big meets and they brought everything they had this weekend," said head coach Matt Utesch. "They absolutely crushed the school record and every single one of them ran a personal PR in their leg."

Skerlj continued to have a dominant weekend for the Mountain Hawks. The graduate-student earned a new PR in the 400m with a time of 58.48.

Skerlj and the distance medley relay team were not the only members of Lehigh's distance group to find success on Friday. Senior Jamie Zamrin had a dominating performance in the 5000m. Zamrin grabbed a first-place finish and a new PR of 17:25.70.

"Winning is very rare at invitationals," said Utesch. "So for Jamie to be able to do that and run a 17 second PR was huge. For the rest of the distance squad, after coming off some big performances last weekend, they continued to drop their times in massive ways with some huge PRs. This is very encouraging as we are leading into championships."

All four Mountain Hawks who raced in the mile finished with a PR. Senior Kara Bonner finished 15th with a time of 4:55.86. Junior Elena Perez-Segnini followed Bonner, finishing with a time of 5:05.37. First-year Lauryn Heskin finished at 5:10.72 and junior Andrea Miller grabbed a new PR of 5:14.07.

On Saturday, Lehigh's distance group continued to dominate. First-year Savanah Beavers and sophomore Andrine Larsen both earned new PRs in the 3000m. Beavers finished with a time of 10:23.23 and Larsen finished at 10:24.41

"We look forward to next weekend as it's another weekend to perfect technique and to compete against some more solid competition," said Utesch.

Lehigh has a busy weekend coming up. Several athletes will travel to West Long Branch, N.J. for the Monmouth Invitational while others will head back to the Armory for the Rutgers Invitational. Both meets will take place Feb. 11-12.
