Lehigh hosts Loyola for Play4Kay Saturday at Stabler

2/18/2022 8:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On Saturday, the Lehigh women's basketball team returns home to Stabler Arena to face Loyola Maryland on Play4Kay with tip-off set for 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on Service Electric Network and on ESPN+ with Mike Zambelli (PxP) and Tracy Cyr (Analyst) on the call. It really is "Home Sweet Home" for the Mountain Hawks, who are 12-2 at home this year with only a non-league loss to Mizzou back in November and against Bucknell Jan. 12.

There's no way around it, Wednesday night's 56-54 loss to Bucknell was a heartbreaker, as the Mountain Hawks, who led by as many as 13 points going into the locker room at the end of the first half, were out-scored 33-20 in the second half, falling to the Bison and seeing their four-game win streak snapped.

Mackenzie Kramer continued her dominance against the Bison Wednesday despite the loss, putting up a team-high 27 points on five 3-pointers and nine field goals. It marked the second consecutive game with over 25 points for Kramer and she has tallied 11 3-pointers over her last two games. Senior forward Emma Grothaus recorded her third straight double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds as Kramer and Grothaus combined for 45 of Lehigh's 54 points on the night.

Junior guard Anna Harvey finished with a team-high four assists in 14 minutes off the bench, while senior guard Clair Steele finished with three. Despite only playing 18 minutes due to an injury suffered at the end of the first half, senior guard Megan Walker returned late in the third quarter and finished with two steals before fouling out of the game in the fourth.

The difference was Lehigh's 20 turnovers, the most the team has committed since giving the ball up 21 times in the non-league finale at George Washington back on Dec. 21. The Mountain Hawks forced seven Bucknell turnovers on a total of four steals. Lehigh shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) as a team in the contest, while going 32 percent (8-for-25) from beyond-the-arc and just 57.1 percent (4-for-7) from the free throw line.

It's been a struggle this season through 24 contests for Loyola Maryland, going 4-20 in those games and sitting in last in the Patriot League standings with a 1-13 league record.

On top of all of that, the Greyhounds have yet to win a road game this season, both in non-league and league play, going 0-12 away from Baltimore.

Loyola has fallen in six straight games and are searching for its first victory since a 62-61 win over Colgate back on Jan. 26. The team's previous win before that one was back on Dec. 4 vs. Mount St. Mary's.

Aside from struggling through the schedule this season under first-year head coach Danielle O'Banion, first year forward Lex Therien has been excellent and is in a good position to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Year when it's all said and done.

Therien is averaging a double-double this year with 12.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game for the Greyhounds. She is also shooting a team-best 43.5 percent from the field and is also averaging 1.4 steals per contest as well.

In addition to Therien's efforts on the offensive side of the ball, Taleah Dixon has also been impressive in all of Loyola's games this season, averaging 11.5 points per game as well as 2.5 assists. Bri Rozzi leads the way in that latter category with a mark of 3.0 assists per game so far.

At 54.3 points per game as a team, Loyola's offense ranks eighth of Patriot League squads and is the fifth-best 3-point shooting team in terms of accuracy at 30.8 percent.

In 22 all-time meetings, Lehigh leads the series, 15-7 including 11-4 in Patriot League play dating back to the fisrt meeting between the two squads back in 1982.

The Mountain Hawks have come out on top in six straight meetings dating back to Feb. 21, 2018.

Lehigh took down Loyola on the road earlier this season, 72-61. First year Ella Stemmer was the spark with 15 points on five 3-pointers.
