1/1/2022 11:48:00 AM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After Thursday's opener vs. American was postponed, the road to a second consecutive Patriot League Championship begins Sunday as the Lehigh women's basketball team kicks off the new year and the league schedule by traveling to Hamilton to visit Colgate at 2 p.m.
Â
The Mountain Hawks concluded a challenging non-league schedule at 8-3 and closed the book on the slate with a convincing 70-57 win over George Washington on the road in which sophomore Mackenzie Kramer notched a career-high 31 points with a career-best seven 3-pointers. For her performance, Kramer was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the second week in a row.
Â
Two other players also scored in double-figures in the victory as Megan Walker added 16 points and Emma Grothaus finished with 12. Walker scored eight straight points late in the fourth quarter to help the Mountain Hawks re-claim an 11-point lead, while Grothaus also tallied 20 rebounds, the most since Lexi Martins set the single-game program record of 23 back in 2015.
Â
With the absences of Frannie Hottinger and Clair Steele, many players have stepped up in their places, especially with Kramer, who is now the Mountain Hawks' leading scorer at 17.1 points per game. At 3.5 3-pointers made per game, she is also one of the most elite perimeter shooters in the nation, coming in at sixth in that category. Her 39 made 3-pointers are a team-high by far, as Walker ranks second with 24. In place of Steele, junior guard Anna Harvey tallied a career-high six assists in the victory at GW. She also played 31 minutes in her second straight start at the point, also a career-high total.
Â
The Ganiyat Adeduntan era for Colgate has been off to a rough start, currently 2-10 overall after falling in its Patriot League opener Wednesday to Lafayette, 59-37.
Â
The Raiders are currently on a five-game skid, playing without a victory since Dec. 2 at Siena. Colgate's only other win came at home in the second game of the season back on Nov. 13 vs. UMBC. On the losing streak, it fell to UAlbany, St. Bonaventure, Merrimack, Harvard and the Leopards to kick off league play.
Â
Only first year Sophia Diehl managed to reach double-digits against Lafayette, scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Taylor Golembiewski and Tiasia McMillan each chipped in eight, while veteran Alexa Brodie had five points. Morgan McMahon finished with a team-high nine rebounds, while four different Raiders had a pair of assists.
Â
Colgate has been without the services of leading scorer Taylor Langan (10.3 ppg) since Nov. 17, playing just three games in 2021-22 so far. Golembiewski is next on the list at 9.8 points per game, while Diehl is at 9.1 with 4.9 rebounds per contest so far.
Â
The Raiders are averaging 51.5 points per game as a team, allowing an average of 64.3 points per game to opponents for a -12.8 scoring differential. At 229 3-point field goal attempts, Colgate ranks third in the Patriot League, while sitting fourth in free throw percentage (72.3 percent).
Â
Historically, Lehigh has had dominant success against Colgate in the all-time series, leading the way 44-28.
Â
After not playing against each other during the 2020-21 season, the Mountain Hawks hold a two-game win streak over the Raiders after claiming the 2019-20 regular season finale and Patriot League Quarterfinal against Colgate, both at Cotterell Court.
Â
Lehigh has won five of the last six matchups over Colgate dating back to Jan. 23, 2019. The Mountain Hawks' last loss in Hamilton was back on Feb. 22, 2017. Since then, Lehigh is on a four-game win streak on the road.
