BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team came up on the short end of an 8-2 final Monday afternoon against Bucknell at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park. In just their second loss of the year to Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks' four-game win streak was snapped on the season, falling to 12-8 overall with a 9-3 record in Patriot League play.
In the middle of the order, juniors Casey Rother and Joe Gorla each recorded two-hit games to cap off impressive weeks where both hit over .500 in four games.
Bucknell scored the first five runs of the game on Monday, starting with an RBI off a double play in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bison added four runs in the top of the fourth inning following three walks and a pair of passed balls to take a 5-0 lead over the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh got a couple of runs back in the bottom of the inning, starting with a Quinn McKenna RBI single to right center field, scoring Gorla and then a Cam Hubbard RBI single to center field to make it a 5-2 Bucknell advantage.
The Bison tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth after Brendan Lowery bunted with one away and scored a run on the sacrifice, pushing the Bucknell lead to 6-2. Jacob Terwilliger tripled to left center field on the very next at-bat, scoring Logan Kellerman to take a 7-2 lead.
Bucknell's final run of the game came in the top of the eighth inning on a no-out ground out with the bases loaded that brought in a run.
Lehigh had seven hits as a team led by Rother and Gorla, as three other players (Riley Davis, Hubbard, McKenna) finished with a hit each.
Freshman Lucas Rich was charged with the loss in his first career start. He went 3.1 innings without allowing a hit, but walked five batters with an earned run and two strikeouts. Freshman Tyler Thompson appeared for the first time of his career in relief, going 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
The Mountain Hawks continue Patriot League play on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Lafayette at J. David Walker Field. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
