Lehigh Drops High-Scoring Opener vs. Drexel, 19-17

2/20/2021 6:27:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Seeing its first game action in nearly a year, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team came back from an 8-4 deficit to take multiple leads, but Drexel used a late surge to go ahead 19-16, on the way to downing the Mountain Hawks, 19-17 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"It was tremendous just to get an opportunity to compete today and we are thankful that we've gotten started in February," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We know we'll be a much better team with a couple more games under our belt. We made some mistakes today. We are much more capable than we played today, especially defensively, but today was a good starting point."

Graduate student Sondra Dickey continued where she left off in 2020, scoring a career-high eight goals, dishing an assist while adding a groundball and four draw controls. In the process, Dickey jumped two spots into third place in program history for career goals with 169. Sophomore Emma Eberhardt tallied seven points via a goal and career-high six assists. Classmate Katia Carnevale recorded four goals and two assists. Five other Mountain Hawks scored a goal.
Defensively, graduate student Alexandra Ladda posted four groundballs and two caused turnovers while also scoring her second-career goal. Dickey's four draw controls were a team high; senior Cecily Redfern and junior Jenna Garden each collected three.

After Drexel led 5-2, 7-3 and 8-4 early on, Lehigh responded with a three-goal run, two of which were scored by Dickey, to get back within 8-7 with 4:33 left in the first half. The Mountain Hawks began the second half on a 4-0 run to turn an 11-9 halftime deficit into a 13-11 advantage, Lehigh's first lead of the game.

The game of runs continued, however, as the Dragons scored three straight and eight of the next 11 to take a lead and create separation.

For the game, Lehigh held a 33-26 edge in shots and 23-18 advantage in groundballs. Drexel held a 22-16 edge in draw controls.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday when they host another Philadelphia-area program, Saint Joseph's, at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
